Nice rifle but....
I don't like the shillac covering that rifle has on it. Too many times do we see military items that have been shined up too much. I like the wood as is, just cleaned, not shined. But of course...it's your rifle. That is just my oppinion.

Unfortunatly for me the K.98. stock was already varnished when i bought
it.....

But it is such a nice rifle i had to have it.
I will attempt to strip the varnish off and apply some oil.
If anyone knows the best/safest way to remove the varnish, please
let me know.....
Many thanks,
steve.

Hello Steve, i found it the best way. at a work xmas party i got talking to my boss about my third reich porcelain collection (as you do) when he told me he had a K98 in his shed that he would like to get rid of, ive since had to make it legal (bummer) but it came straight from france 60 odd years ago and had only been well wrapped and left all that time. a real find. cheers Glenn

Yea, it is no big deal to take the varnish off. My friend has done it on many rifles, however im not sure how to do it. You can probally search around on google and find some good sites that can help taking the finish off wood. Good Luck, and its still a damn nice rifle and you can bet i would've bought it too!!

My de-act MG-42
Manufacturer: cra/Maget
Ex-Austrian Army I presume.
This picture was taken last spring, after that, I got the flipping L-shaped AA-extension to rear sight, which was missing on this shot.
Now I need a spiderweb-AA sight and I am even happier(for a short moment...lafette...dreibein...).

My friend has a de-act MG34. If you're interested let me know. It's $700 i believe. But he will probally go lower if you would like it. Also, I've been thinking about getting an MG42 parts-kit, is that a big rip-off or a decent way to get a MG42 for cheap. (de-act of course).Dunkirchen1940 wrote:VERY NICE MG-42! I hope to buy a dewatted one eventually myself, either a MG-34 or MG-42. Hard decision!
