Henning von Holtzendorff promotion to Grossadmiral

Post by Kriegsmarine Großadmiral » 09 Jun 2018 19:53

When was Holtzendorff promoted to Grossadmiral?

Hildebrand & Henriot's "Deutschlands Admirale 1849-1945" give the date of promotion as 31 May 1918
All Internet sources give the date as 31 July 1918
Which one is correct?
Thanks!

Extract from the Marine-Verordnungsblatt Nr. 19, published 15 August 1918. Promoted per cabinet order of 31 May 1918.

Thank you Glenn! That means all the internet sources are wrong. I thought that the date 31 May 1918 from Hildebrand & Henriot could be outdated but it isn't after all.

Glenn, I was provided this scan from the Ehrenrangliste by a member of another forum.
It states Holtzendorff got the patent to Großadmiral on 31 July 1918?
Does this mean he was promoted per cabinet order on 31 May but recieved the patent on 31 July 1918? I.e. 2 months later?

I do own a copy of the Ehrenrangliste and that was the first source I consulted. However, in this case, I think the MVB is correct and the editors of the Ehrenrangliste got it wrong. The A.K.O. is explicit; it does not promote the admiral “ohne Patent” so one would assume the effective date of his seniority was 31 May 1918.

Glenn

Holtzendorff was definitely promoted to Großadmiral on 31 July 1918. This was the day when he was fired, soon to be replaced by Scheer. The promotion was intended as a last gesture. The question is whether the promotion was backdated to May, whether this is simply a typo in the MVO or whether this was a deliberate try to conceal the real circumstances of his dismissal (the official reason was "illness", but although Holtzendorff was in fact seriously ill, this was only one aspect of his removal).
There are times in history when staying neutral means taking sides.
