► Photothread: Umbauwagen

Since the Beute- and Umbauwagen has been renamed to a more restricting Photothread: Allied Vehicles in German Service I'm starting a new one for Umbaus.

Me Likey!!!

1938 Oldsmobile and a 1938 Chevrolet both umbau types. Both ex ebay shots.

I loved the Opel/1940 Chevrolet photo. Was there any explanation? The auction is completed so no details.

Hi Bill,

There was no caption for that photo and can't recall if the seller mentioned which of the eight group of negatives depicting the career of the 7th Infantry Division it was from.

Just for fun, umbaus are not restricted to WWII.

Hi Bill,

what an interesting pic of an Umbauwagen. The rear part seems to be from a mittlerer Einheits-PKw.

Best regards

Hello Bill,
That is beauty, never seen anything like that before. Perhaps a limited run of some sort? It looks too intricate and involved to be a "field" conversion. The spare wheel mount alone would be a triumph, and the wheels suggest a Gaz AA base, a truck rather than a car. Intriguing, thank you.
Kerry.

Hi all:

I am still unsure exactly what I found here. As Kerry says, the wheels are AA, whether Ford or GAZ I am not sure.
The proportions of the body would indicate to me that it may be on an A chassis but the angle of the photo could put us off the course.

The basic design certainly seems to mimic the style of the German Standard Medium Passenger Car so I would imagine it was built by them.

Hopefully another member here has seen a photo of a similar vehicle and can add some further comments.

Markus, am I imagining it or is that "penthouse" built on the Quad made of wood ?
