Josef Brettschneider took part in the Battle of Berlin as a young lieutenant. In a city surrounded by Soviet troops, he had to fight with his Volkssturm unit, although the situation was hopeless.

Josef Brettschneider was born in Düsseldorf in 1924. After school he moved to Xanten, where he studied at the Nazi Teacher Training Institute. In April 1943 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and finally sent to a war school for officer training in Potsdam.

In March 1944, when he was just 20, he became an officer candidate in the Volkssturm Battalion 3/607. The German Volkssturm had been set up a few months before the end of the war following a Fuehrer decree of 25 September 1944. All men capable of weapons between the ages of 16 and 60 were called up to strengthen the Wehrmacht. However, the Volkssturm units were insufficiently trained and poorly armed, so their chances of survival were low.

The young lieutenant Josef Brettschneider fought with his Volkssturm battalion in April 1945 in the Battle of Berlin. In his diary he wrote: "Equipped only with infantry weapons, a few machine guns and grenade launchers, we occupy previously dug trenches on a hill at the edge of the forest. We have little hope of being able to stop the opponent effectively. Despair and worries are beginning to spread."

Josef Brettschneider spent the last days of the war in the Spandau Citadel, a fortress in the west of Berlin. After Brettschneider had negotiated the abandonment of the citadel, the Soviets took the fortress without resistance. After the war, Brettschneider remained a prisoner of war north of Moscow until September 1946.

1. Panzervernichtungs-Brigade "Hitlerjugend" is subordinated to AOK 12

It had been set up in Radebeul in February as a Großverband des Deutschen Volkssturms III contingent of members of military training camps,
mainly from the German eastern territories, which are now in enemy hands, and from Adolf–Hitler–Schülern of the 1928/29 years of military service.

Four Bataillones gathered in the Dresden area were added to the "Panzernahkampf-Brigade", and some leaders of the Bund Deutscher Mädel arrived, who were voluntarily obliged as staff service assistants. With them and about 200 young men, the staff company was set up by Obergefolgschaftsführer Mahr. By 6 February, the leadership staff of volunteer full-time leader corps members of the territories and Banne had also arrived.

In addition, there were volunteer war leaders of the HJ. Kommandeur der Brigade was initially Stabsführer Mäckel, as his deputy Oberbannführer Kern was ordered. Reichjugendführer Axmann presented awards to members of the Silesian Battalion who had excelled at Görlitz. The Großverband was founded in
1. Panzervernichtungs-Brigade "Hitlerjugend" renamed. In the Reichsausbildungslager I der HJ – Lager „Seeland“ – bei Klein Köris, the Panzervernichtungs-Brigade „Hitlerjugend“ was set up, its commander was Oberbannführer Ohlendorf. After completing the training in mid-March, the 1. Panzervernichtungs "HJ" for the deployment or the Heeresgruppe Weichsel (Reichsführer – SS Himmler) for the protection of the Reich capital in the area of Berlin and Frankfurt a. d. For the purpose of rapid focus formation, a Kampfgruppenstab was set up in Fürstenwalde. Except for the 1. Panzervernichtungs-Brigade
between the Oder heights and the forest exclusion zone there were another two Panzerjagd-Brigaden und Armeereserven. When, after the
beginning of the Soviet Oder offensive on 16 April, the focal points at the Oder Heights near Seelow and Briezen at the XI SS – Pzk and OT. AK,
which consumed the reserves, the operational area of the brigade shifted with the intervention of the LVI. PzK (General Weidling), whose general command it was subordinated in the section Müncheberg – Harneken. Here the battalions were deployed on the occasion of the crisis in the
9. Fallschirmjäger-Division and in the fight against breaking enemy tank packs on 18.4. by parts of the 18. Panzer-Grenadier-Division and the
11. SS – Freiw. Panzer-Grenadier-Division "Nordland" replaced. Against the parts of the brigade deployed north of Müncheberg in the Märkische Schweiz near Buckow, superior Soviet tank units with accompanying infantry broke out after a barrage since the morning hours, but the positions
in the burning woodlands were held in the entire section west of Hermersdorf defended by the "Hitler Youth". The next day, the brigade was
pulled out of the fight and then intervened again in the defensive battle at Strausberg and in the Werneuchen area. After the combat mission,
the mass of the brigade was returned to the north. Parts over Berlin, and marched for other use in the army area of Heeresgruppe Weichsel,

The 1. Panzervernichtungs-Brigade, around 24 April, "HJ" moved into a tank barrier line on Reichsstraße 167 near Löwenberg i. d. Mark between
north of Oranienburg and Gransee with the brigade command post in Vielitz. It secured the rear army area of the 3rd Panzer Army (General v. Manteuffel) in the back of the Army Division Steiner (SS – Obergruppenführer Steiner), which was deployed with a front to the south on both sides

Lager "Maibach I" – headquarters fes OKH – in Zossen. The Ersatz-Brigade had the order to close the Reichsautobahn BERLINER RING–COTTBUS in
the Seenenge near Teupitz. With its regular personnel, the commanded military personnel and about 50 HJ members of the DV III, it had set up
an Alarmanteilung aus two Einheiten with a total of 4 Panzerjagd-Kommandos bzw. 8 Panzervernichtungs-Trupps and positioned it at the RAB – Abzweigung Gr. Köris. On the western shore of Lake Teupitz, with its left wing, the RAD–Grenadier Regiment "Jahn" 1 (Oberstarbeitsführer Konopka) was to be connected. The attacking tip of the 3rd Guards Tank Army had made a tactical stop in Baruth to refuel, north of it stood only a weak Volkssturm-Einheiten (DV I/II) with two Sturmflak 8,8cm opposite. on the 21st and had temporarily taken up accommodation in the Reichsjugendführerschule I. On the occasion of his announcement on 27 April, Oberbannführer Kern ordered the previous officer z.b. V. to the staff of the
Panzervernichtungs-Ersatz-Brigade "HJ" Hauptgefolgschaftsführer Voigt, to go to the former staff quarters of the Inspector General of the Panzertruppen in Neuruppin in order to report as a liaison officer to AOK 12 via the Wehrmacht – mediation of the combat commander at the Ia
of the 12th Army, Lieutenant Colonel d. G. Frh. V. Humbold – Dachroeden. He gave the reserve officer of the army – a graduate of the Academy
for Youth Leadership – an Adolf Hitler student as a personal order to the reserve officer of the army in need of care because of his unhealed
wounds.

After the breakthrough of the Soviet forces in the 3rd Panzer Army in the Line Oranienburg–Gransee, the battalions are in combat mission to

Fully agree, another story from Australia - chatted to a english lass in Melbourne, turned out we had both - two europeans down under - lived in Freemantle, WA, in the same street, in the same house, in the same room just a few months apart. Small world it is.
