Re: Waffen-SS in Africa?
I believe the gold was for NCO,s and officers in the African corps, but there wasn't any SS in Africa.

Re: Waffen-SS in Africa?
Officers continued to wear silver on their tropical uniforms and NCOs used a light blue.Only the Navy used yellow/gold for non-generals.

Re: Waffen-SS in Africa?
Belatedly.
I found this in my ancient (1977) copy of UNIFORMS, ORGANIZATION AND HISTORY OF THE AFRIKAKORPS, by Roger James Bender and Richard D. Law
SS/SD Einsatz-Kommando Tunis
Although it has long been known that no Waffen-SS combat troops were committed to the North African campaign, it is interesting to note that the SD (Sicherrheistdienst – Security Police) was indeed present on the African continent during the desert war. Little is known of this SS agency stationed in Tunis but is power was far-reaching. SD Einsatz-Kommando Tunis had complete power to direct and inspect French Police in Tunisia. 1 Their mission was the destruction of North African spy networks, the elimination of black marketeers, the tracking down of subversives, etc. It is most probable that the tropical uniform with SS-insignia or civilian clothing was worn during this Tunisian assignment
NOTE:
SS personnel who fulfilled the stipulations for the “Afrika” cuff title, were permitted to wear it with the SS uniform
Footnote 1
Microfilm Publication T315, roll 416, frame 8731171, and T315, roll 2278, frames 00486 and 000488

Re: Waffen-SS in Africa?
SS-Panzerregiment 11 "Hermann von Salza" was formed in July 1943 so a jacket with that cuff title has nothing to do with the Afrika Korps or SS units in Africa.

"On Sunday December 6,Rauff summoned to his office Borgel and Haime Bellaiche, the chief rabbi of Tunis."
Rauff read out a military decree ordering Jewish men to perform labor.5000 workers were needed. They were told to draw up an initial list of 2000 men,and that they were to wear yellow Stars of David front and back.24 hours to comply.
Dec 9,"That morning, SS men with submachine guns circulated around the German headquarters on the Avenue de Paris, just down the road from where Jewish workers were to gather."
Only 128 showed up,and apparently Rauff had a fit.1500 people were rounded up.
Is it known exactly which soldiers were present?
