Prior to World War II, and before his film career, Albert had toured Mexico as a clown and high-wire artist with the Escalante Brothers Circus, but secretly worked for U.S. Army intelligence, photographing German U-boats in Mexican harbors. On September 9, 1942, Albert enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and was discharged in 1943 to accept an appointment as a lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat "V" for his actions during the invasion of Tarawa in November 1943, when, as the pilot of a Coast Guard landing craft, he rescued 47 Marines who were stranded offshore (and supervised the rescue of 30 others), while under heavy enemy machine-gun fire.

With respect to Mr. Lee Marvin's military career in the USMC, Mr. Felix C stated :

Lee Marvin is lauded for his experience and it is four days of combat before being
wounded. Obviously he saw plenty in those days.

In the early 1970s, there was an afternoon ' Talk Show ' hosted by British Television personality
David Frost. One afternoon, his guest was Lee Marvin, who spoke of his life and career. His
service in WW2 came up for discussion, and he mentioned that he had been a Marine in WW2.

Mr. Frost asked him if he had seen any combat, and Lee Marvin replied that, " Yeah, I was
wounded by a Jap Sniper on Saipan."

Mr. Frost was surprised by this, and followed up with the question, " Where were you wounded ? "

Lee Marvin's face took on a wry smile, and he answered, " I got shot in Saipan.... OK ?"

David Frost seemed confused, and didn't speak for a few seconds, and then, as members of the
audience began to chuckle, and some applauded, he realized what Lee Marvin was telling him,
and, slightly ambarassed, nodded and said, " Ah .... yes .... of course ..... it was a Sniper..... "

Lee Marvin in fact spent a number of months in hospital recovering from the damage to his
sciatic nerve.

Paul Newman (January 26, 1925 – September 26, 2008)

Newman served in a replacement squadron of the US Navy as a turret gunner and radioman in an Avenger torpedo bomber in the Pacific theater.

Eli Wallach (December 7, 1915 – June 24, 2014)

He was drafted into the US Army in 1940 and served a medical administrative officer in North Africa and France. Wallach earned several decorations and was discharged as a captain following the war's end in 1945.

Hans Cristian Blech

In 1941 Blech was drafted into the Wehrmacht and served as a soldier in the German-Soviet War. The distinctive scars on his face are not, as is often read, from the Second World War, but from a car accident on Darmstadt's Luisenplatz, in which Blech was involved as a 14-year-old.

The German "soldier" per se, in very many movies...

I can't access the video labelled "Private"

However, Dunning and his PR team exaggerated his war service. He seems to have served in Europe in an AAA unit and was wounded by a mine in July(?) 1944.

However by 1990 he was appearing to claim that he was both at Omaha Beach and landed by glider. a survivor of the Malmedy massacre and killed several Germans by beatign them to death with rocks. These details appeared in the print version of his obituary in the Daily Telegraph after his death. None of this added up or could be corroborated. There is a toe curling TV interview in some chat show where he tells some extraordinary stories in front of some other celebrity who really was there.

He was a WW2 veteran wounded in action. Maybe he was disturbed by his experiences. Maybe he had an extreme case of "story adoption" - repeating other people's story so often that you forget it happened to someone else - or maybe he was an example of the exaggerations of old soldiers tales.
