KURETAKE
Navigator
LTJG / LT / LCDR* WAKAMEI Muneo (71) - 05 October 1944 - 30 December 1944 (KIA)
KURETAKE was a 2nd Rank Destroyer. Like 2nd Rank Submarines (Ro-go Submarines), 2nd Rank Destroyers didn’t have the posts below:
- Gunnery Officer
- Topedo Officer
- Navgation Office (Navigator)
- Engineer Officer (Chief Engineer)
Because there is no description about his post in 海軍辞公報 Naval Transfer and Promotion Lists, I have no choice but to guess his specialty from his military record. From the military record of his predecessor and his former predecessor, I speculated as the below:
Crew for Gunnery Officer Duty
LT / LT / LCDR* WAKAMEI Muneo 若命宗雄 (71): 5 October 1944 - 30 December 1944 (KIA) (3 C13072101500)
Crew for Navigation Officer Duty
LT (Res.) / LT (Res.) / LCDR* SUGURO Kengo 勝呂堅吾: 5 May 1944 - 30 December 1944 (KIA) (11 C13072098100)
Do you know something about LT (Res.) SUGURO Kengo 勝呂堅吾?

Can you elaborate on the Kuretakae casualties being so high I have Kuretake casualties as 140 missing/killed
Kuretake
Kuretake was a 2nd Rank Destroyer, so she was small. Standard displacement was 820 tons. The number of crew was 110 at the commission on 1 November 1922. After that the following equipment addition work was carried out:
- Hydrophone (Type Ho?), ESM, 13mm Machine Guns (30 November 1943 - 6 December 1943)
- Type 98 Hydrophone and SONAR, 25mm Machine Cannons (30 April 1944 - 17 May 1944)
I don't know wether the increase with these operators will bring the crew to 140.

Kuretake sank on 30 December 1944.
The following orders were issued on the same day.
(1) “The following ships (stationed at Takao) will be dispatched as soon as they are ready, and the submarine sweeping and rescue of Kuretake survivors will be carried out at 21 ° 00'N and 121 ° 22'E.”
41st Minesweeper (Command Ship)
4 Numbered (151st, 163rd, 176th and 177th) Auxiliary Sub-chasers
4 Unnumbered Auxiliary Sub-chasers (Yoko Maru, Ayukawa Maru, Kiyo Maru and Kochi Maru)
(2) 953rd Naval Air Group should do everything to cooperate to the above.
953rd Naval Air Group put in 1 Pate and 3 Jakes.
According to records 163rd Auxiliary Sub-chaser rescued the survivors. The number of rescuers is unknown, but due to the size of the auxiliary sub-chaser, I don't think there are so many.

Hello Fontessa
I sent off a request in 1997 to the archives in Tokyo which sent me listing of casualties which I had translated which had the Kuretake casualties as 140.
Kind Regards Ian

I have no idea what "the archives in Tokyo" is. Is it “防衛研究所資料閲覧室 Material Reading Room / National Institute for Defense Studies” by any chance?
If not, can you show the Knji for "the archives in Tokyo"? Did it show someshing sbout the number of suevivers?

I found 内令員 Nairei-in, Personnel Table for 2nd Rank Destroyers revised on 15 July 1944.
https://www.jacar.archives.go.jp/aj/met ... L_TYPE=pdf ST13 - ST14
According to it, the Personnel Table for Kuri, Tsuga, Hasu, Kuretake and Asagaois:
Commanding Officer: 1
Line Officers: 3
Engineer Officer: 1
Special Duty Line Officer: 1
Special Duty Engineer Officer: 1
Chief Petty Officer: 1
Chief Engineer Petty Officer: 1
Petty Officers: 14
Engineer Petty Officers: 10
Account Petty Officers: 2
Seamen: 44
Seamen (Engineer): 32
Seamen (Repair): 2
Seamen (Accounts): 4
Total: 117
Additions when not belonging to Destroyer Division (Kuretake was applicable)
*Medical Branch Officer: 1
**Accounts Branch Officer: 1
Medical Petty Officer or Medical Seaman: 1
Total: 120
* LT / LCDR* COGA Kiyoshi 古賀清史: KIA on 30 December 1944
** LT / LCDR* KURIHARA Shin’ya 栗原信也: KIA on 30 December 1944

It has been applied since the addition of the equipment I mentioned, but I feel that the number of people is small.

According to WATANABE Hiroshi’s TROM, 2 Officers below ijnfleetadmiral shown were not on board Kuretake.

Hello Fontessa
Material reading room is correct I remember now but don`t have the kanji/ paperwork any more unfortunately!
The only thing a recall was the number 140 and kanji symbol looked like an E after the figure though on reflection could have meant complement for the Kuretake as casualties and survivors were unknown?
Thanks again for this information looking forward to your replies regarding the Kuwa, Tachibana and the Ume! :D
Kind regards Ian

JACAR C12121387100 page 0312 lists both 4513 and 4538 as the 518 Special Guard Battalion is that correct??? I would think it should only be one of those numbers
