Norwegian NS and collaborationist music

Post by Eightball » 07 Nov 2004 14:26

[Several threads dealing with Norwegian NS and collaborationist music have been merged and renamed by the host, Ivan Ž.]

I'm doing a big project on the Norwegian SS for school, and I was thinking about playing a few songs in the presentation.

I once had a song "Her kommer gutta fra Den Norske Legion" (Here are the men of DNL, roughly translated), however I seem to have lost it. Does anyone know of a place I can download it, or does anyone have it? I appreciate it very much if someone could provide me it.

This Hirden song was sung to the melody of "Lied der Legion Condor" by Philipps and Jährig (read more in this topic).

"Budstikken gikk" means "The message went". The first two lines of the song are: "Budstikken gikk fra mann til mann: Kjemp for ditt kjære fedreland." Which means: "The message went from man to man: Fight for your beloved fatherland."

For those who didn't know, the National Library of Norway (Nasjonalbiblioteket), in cooperation with the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK), has published (among other things) a number of rare historical sound files on the library website; the people involved did a tremendeous job and I'm thankful to everyone who participated in the project. However, some files have been partially identified, misidentified or remained unidentified, so there's still a number of rarities hidden in various broadcast recordings on the website. Luckily, with the help of various period sources (mostly song books and newspapers), I've managed to identify most of them.

For this topic, I've made a list of related recordings found on the website. A small number of them were already known to the public, from an old Hammer cassette, or some pirate CDs that copied it. Those tracks were published under semi-correct or incorrect titles, some complete, some incomplete. Listed below are the correct, original titles; I was particularly glad to finally hear the Norwegian Ski Company song complete (four verses), as well as another (previously unknown) SS song recorded on the same occasion (you'll recognise the melody). Listed first is the Nasjonal Samling's anthem, followed by Hirden, AT (Arbeidstjeneste) and Waffen-SS volunteer songs.

A photocopy of the original lyrics (whether they were handwritten by Westbye himself, or by one of his comrades, that I don't know). Westbye was killed in action as an SS-Unterscharführer, at Kaprolat (Karelia), 25 June 1944.

Lyrics and info on "Mariann'" from Karl Holter's Frontkjempere (Oslo, 1951), pp. 102-103 (Holter was a popular Norwegian actor who volunteered for the Waffen-SS and served as a war correspondent; see his photo here). Holter wrote that "unless he was misinformed, it was legionnaire Mürer who wrote the text" to the song. He also mentioned that Mürer was killed in action and that three days before he fell, one of the men added two more verses to his song (the two verses at the bottom).

However, the lyrics published by Holter don't fully match the live recording from 12.07.1943.

These are the matching lyrics (typed by an anonymous in Feb. 1971):
