Majorgeneral M. Salih Erkuş ( M. must be Mehmet)
P (Inf) 1324 (1908)-6
Brigadier: 1941
MaJGEN: 1943
Retired:: 14.7.1946
died: 24.7.1966 Istanbul
As commander of XII th Div. he took part at the military mission of Colonel General Cemil Cahit Toydemir to Germany to inspect the situation of germans at all fronts and to report President İsmet İnönü wheather Turkey join the side of Germans or not. Their report was negative. So Turkey remained neutral during the war.

Mittelberger came to Turkey to teach at military school. Staff Captain Salih Bey who spoke fluent german assised him during 1911-13.Salih Erkuş translated his books into turkish.

Germans showed the best hospitality which they knew very well. But the Turks were not happy what they saw. Look at the faces.

Thank you, he was correct in his call.

You mentioned

I have only found him during the post war Mission;

Mittelberger Hilmar Ritter von Gen German Military Mission 1933-39 1933-39 (1878 at München died 1953) Bavarian General der Infanterie

Was he there during WWI?

Cheers Stay safe
