Mates,
What do you have on the Ottoman Marines of Navy?
reports say there was around 9000 Marines around 1906/07 stated by the British Admiral Gamble, but the number shows around 4000 in 1918?
Reports say the Marines were reduced after a Mutiny in Dec 1906?
Another mentioned that they may have been lost when the Transport ships were sunk in the Black Sea. Ordered three transports, Bahri Ahmir, Midhat Pascha and Bezmi Alem, to Trebizond 6 Nov 1914 and later the transport Izmir could have been carrying large numbers of Troops.
A report said
"Russian Black Sea source claim to have sunk three transports loaded with ammunition, guns, airplanes, cargo and troops. In addition the fully loaded Ottoman transport Beritel was sunk on 13 December 1914.339 The sinking of four combat loaded transports and the loss of experienced combat troops would explain the reduction in the marine forces."
Its true the Ottomans were reinforcing there 3rd Army but other then some Airman who were captured and killed (2nd Tayyare Boluk formed (2x bleriot) 11-14 lost on way to 3rd Army reported 203 men lost when ships sunk by Russian Fleet), I have not seen any details on the other passengers on these ships?
I have not come across any mention of Marines as part of the ottoman Navy before and wondered what was out there?
Any ideas

Re: Ottoman Marines during WWI
we had marines had during the long history to conqure Malta, Creta, Cyprus, Rhodos, Libya, Tunis, Algier ect. There was not a military class called marines during WW1. Because there was not a oversea expedition. Those units on the a/m 3 ships were not marines they were regular ground troops. Since 1970 we have marines again . We call marines "Deniz Piyadesi" (neval infantry) . We established Deniz Piyadesi after Cyprus problem got worse and they played e a vital role during the Cyprus Peace Expedition in 1974 by the landing on Cyprys and cleaning the way for the ground forces.
