Officers of the 26th Regt at Gallipoli April 1915

Post by stevebecker » 22 Jun 2020 22:47

Tosun,

Much has been given of the 27th and 57th Regts at Aribunu but the defence of the 26th Regt at Helles against the British has little I can find.

Do we know the officers of this Regt?

Officers I do have?

Abdürrahim Efendi 26th Regt - 3Bn - 10Co - Lt KIA 25-4-15
Hafiz Kadri Bey CO 26th Regt Maj to LtCol
Halim Bey 26th Regt - OC 1Bn Maj
Mahmut Sabri Bey 26th Regt - OC 3Bn - 4-15 Maj
Yahya 26th Regt - 3Bn - 10Co - 1 plat 4-15 Sgt

Can anyone fill in the gaps?

Cheers

9th Company
11th Company
12th Company

2Bn HQ

5th Company
6th Company
7th Company
8th Company

1st bn HQ

1st Company
2nd company

Maj. Mahmut Sabri :( is a real unknown hero of Turkish history. The searches of history traced him in 1933 in Konya. In his military record it was noticed that "2nd Lt. Mahmut Sabri dismissed from the arny." The history searches believe that there must be a mistake about that notice. Until this time the question is not solved. Nobody knows why such a notice is written on the military record. The searchers also couldnt find a photo of him in his file. They found of Lt. Col Hafiz Kadri commander of 26th Inf. Regiment.

The searches find in Konya a little broschure called
"Seddülbahir'in İlk Şanlı Müdafaası
26. A. III. Tb.un Muharebesi"
( The First Glourious Defence of Seddülbahir
Battle of IIIrd Battalion 26th Regiment)
printed in 1933 in Konya by the commandership of 5th Division. The printing house is "Yeni Anadolu Matbaası" (The new anatolian Printinghouse) This little broschure is the only informative war report about the April 25th 1915. It is well known along whole world. This raport which was printed in the first years of Turkish Revolution on Letters is printed badly. But it is a War Monument for both of us.
It is cashed on the booklet
"Muallim Ferit Ugur'un Vakfıdır Ölüm Ta- 3.3.1942 Konya"
(foundadion of Teacher Ferit Ugur died on 3.3.1942 in Konya)
According to his a/m book there were 3 capts under his command ( 1 KIA, 2 heavily wounded) 3Lts (1 KIA, 2 WIA), He does not mention any names. Attheend thebattalion was taken atthe back witj 570 men.
May he rest in peace

Maj.Mahmut Sabri Bey commander of 3rd Battalion of the 26th Regt. which resisted the landing on April 25th 1915 reported his HQ that " The time passed already 05:00. The naval bombardement to the shore were few and far. The vessels carring landing units were aproaching. We counted the war and cargo vessels and reported them to the regimental HQ which was 5-6 kms away. The enemy vessels were 12 huge war ships (Dretnoughts, armoured ships, cruizers), 10 huge, 13 small cargo ships, a lot of tugboats, 2 huge barges."

Source: Sayılır, B. (2014). Selanikli Yüzbaşı Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi’nin Çanakkale Muharebeleri Günlüğü, Grafiker Yayınları, Ankara, p.64-65.

Still many gaps but these names have been saved for now.
