Losses

How would you compare the loss of a crew of a ship to that of a land unit?

In my opinion a ship company is higher trained than a standard infantry regt. but maybe on par with a tank regt.

Just a question?

I think you're right - the mere number of German soldiers, growing from 100.000 to millions in a few years, makes it impossible for all of the German soldiers to have been little more than civilians with guns. Of course, there were vets, but not nearly enough.

The Kriegsmarine was better trained, IMO. Also, they had special functions which they knew by heart, and most of the needs could be covered by vets.

I agree with your assumption that they would probably rank alongside Panzer crews in training and importance.
