5 Officers sentenced to death - Bridge Remagan

Post by Paul H » 23 Jun 2022 08:21

On the website https://bruecke-remagen.de/brucke/

it mentions -

"The German army command desperately tried to bring down the bridge in the following days by bombing raids and combat floats. Hitler, in impotent rage, set up a summary court which sentenced five officers to death and had four of them shot in the Westerwald."

Yet I cant find anything about these five officers who were sentence to death.

Does anyone have any info?

I only have a vague remembrance, that the court in question was Fliegendes Sondergericht West under the command of Generalleutnant Dr. Rudolf Hübner with two more officers - one I remember was Oberstleutnant Anton Ehrnsperger, who accompanied Burgdorf and Maisel to their last famous meeting with Rommel.

Being something of a newcomer, I had thought that there were others who were more conversant on this question than I was, but...

extracted from THE BRIDGE AT REMAGEN, by Ken Hechler (my battered paperback copy of the book is copyright 1957)

Sentenced to death and shot
Major Hans Scheller – LXVII Army Corps staff officer (adjutant), appointed “Commandant of Remagen” on March 7
Lieutenant Karl Heinz Peters – commander of a nearby AA battery “armed with rocket launchers”
Major August Kraft – “battalion commander of the engineers at Remagen”
Major Herbert Strobel – commander of “51st Motorized Engineer Regimental Staff” in the Remagen sector, and Kraft's superior

Sentenced to death in abstentia (he was a POW in American hands)
Captain Willi Bragte - “combat commander of the whole Remagen area”

[somewhat off topic, I had the privilege of knowing a gentleman, now deceased, who was a member of the 27th Armored Infantry Battalion, the unit that captured the bridge. He was the assault gun platoon commander of the battalion and led his tanks across the bridge that night, on his hands and knees, feeling for holes in the decking]
