German Records of Dieppe and Rhineland Campaign

Post by Nathan Greenfield » 31 May 2010 18:38

Hello:

I am a Canadian Military historian; in 2007 Harper/Collins, Canada published my Battle of the St. Lawrence: The Second World War in Canada in 2008 my Baptism of Fire: The Second Battle of Ypres and the Forging of Canada, April 1915 this fall, H/C will publish my The Damned: The Canadians at Hong Kong and the POW Experience, 1941-45.

I am presently beginning work on my next book. I am looking for German records for Dieppe and/or the Rhineland Campaign.

The German Order of Battle at Dieppe was:

302nd Static Infantry Division (Gen. Kanrad Haase)
570th Infantry Regiment
571st Infantry Regiment
572nd Infantry Regiment
302nd Artillery Regiment
302nd Reconnaissance Battalion
302nd Antitank Battalion
302nd Engineer Battalion
216th Battery
813th Battery
2/770 Army Coastal Battery
Heavy Flak group

Luftwaffe:
Jagdgeschwader 2 (2nd Fighter Wing)
Jagdgeschwader 26 (26th Fighter Wing)
Kampfgeschwader 2 (2nd Bomber Wing)
II./Kampfgeschader 40 (II. Group/40th Bomber Wing)
1.(F)/123 Reconnaissance

The German Order of Battle for the Rhineland Campaign was:

Major-General Heinz Fieburg’s 84th Division
General Schlemm’s First Parachute Army
180th Infantry Division
88th Corps (21st Army)
2nd Parachute Division
276th Magen Battalion
665th Grenadier Regiment
1062th Grenadier Regiment
1051st Grenadier Regiment
1052nd Grenadier Regiment
7th Parachute Division
15th Panzer Grenadier Division
47th Panzer Corps
116th Panzer Corps
346th Division

I would appreciate any help you can give me in finding either official records or memoirs.

Sincerely,

Dr. Nathan M. Greenfield

CMH have various German records relating to Dieppe that were recovered post-war available online.

Hi Nathan

Not the quickest reply from me.

I found a partial ORBAT for the elements of 1 Para Army defending against the 1 Canadian Army in Op Veritable. There are a few holes I know of (e.g. 655 Heavy AT Bn) and a few battalions that I've classed as homeless becasue the original has no parent division.

84 Inf Div:
I & II Bns 1051 GR;
I & II Bns 1052 GR;
I & II Bns 1062 GR;
84 Fus Bn;
279 Magen Bn.
180 Inf Div:
I & II Bns 1221 GR;
II Bn 1222 GR;
I & II Bns 1223 GR;
180 Fus Bn.
190 Inf Div:
II Bn, 1224 GR;
I Bn,, 1225 GR
190 Fus Bn.
346 Inf Div:
346 Fus Bn.
2 Para Div:
I, II & III Bns, 2 Para Regt;
II & III Bns, 7 Para Regt.
6 Para Div:
I & III Bns, 16 Para Regt;
I, II & III Bns, 17 Para Regt;
I, II & III Bns, 18 Para Regt.
7 Para Div:
I & II Bns, 19 Para Regt;
II Bn, 20 Para Regt;
I & II Bns, 21 Para Regt;
7 Para FEB (whatever that means).
8 Para Div:
I & II Bns, Para Lehr Regt.
15 PzG Div:
I & II Bns, 104 PGR;
I & II Bns, 115 PGR.
116 Pz Div:
I & II Bns, 60 PGR,
I & II Bns, 156 PGR.
Homeless Bns:
Bn Riegels (possibly 84 Div);
Security Bn Munster VI (possibly 84 Div);
Para Bn Crahns (Possibly 7 Para Div);
12 Para Recce Bn;
Para Army Assault Bn.

Hope that helps.
