walter gropius

Post by Balrog » 10 Jan 2004 04:23

i am looking for information on the war record of walter gropius(1883-1969), the architect and one of the leaders of the bauhaus movement in post war germany.

i watched a movie that dealt with germans and austrians in world war one and in it they mentioned that walter gropius was a "highly decorated" german army officer. is that true? was he a highly decorated soldier? in the film he wore what looked like a hussar uniform, was gropius in a hussar regiment?

does anyone have a war time photo of walter gropius in uniform?

does anyone have a record of what medals walter gropius was awarded?

all the boigraphical information on the web only has a brief mention that gropius served in ww1, but no information on his service record.

no, I'm not so good at military ranks... sorry.

but what source told you that he was highly decorated? I looked at the website of the german historic museum online, which is usually pretty accurate, but they didn't even mention that he was in the 1st WW military.

another source, the bauhaus online, just told that he was stationed at the westfront.

but maybe it's propaganda again, and the pages just don't want to mention his military career ;)

glad I could help

the cut of that uniform he is wearing seems unusual. could that tunic be of his own design? i know that some officers could get away with minor alterations to their uniforms. especially in france, that is how Coco Chanel got some fashion experience, altering officer uniforms before ww1.

does anyone know if that tunic gropius is wearing is a standard cut?
