He commanded the 1 GRzF Nov 1914-Nov 1916.

Does anyone know if he was related to Otto von Bismarck?

Related, but probably as close as you and I are. Maj. Friedrich von Bismarck was Prince Otto's 7th cousin twice removed. Otto's great-(x7)-grandfather was Friedrich's great-(x9)-grandfather, Friedrich "The Permutator" von Bismarck (1513-1589).

Friedrich von Bismarck was born on 23 July 1870 in Magdeburg, Prussian Saxony. He was KIA 5 November 1916 near Barleux-Biaches. Military death kind of ran in the family. His father, Herebord von Bismarck died of wounds on 7 November 1870 at Aachen, while Friedrich was an infant. Georg von Bismarck, who died at El Alamein (heart attack?) in 1942 while I believe in command of the Afrika Korps, was Friedrich's 2nd cousin - their grandfathers were brothers. Friedrich's 1st cousin (their fathers were brothers), Hauptmann Claus-Ulrich von Bismarck of GR 9, was wounded 18 October 1916 and died 1 January 1917.

Other distantly related Bismarck KIAs/DOWs:

Heyno von Bismarck: 29 August 1914 near St. Quentin
A Hptm. von Bismarck with GR 2 whose name I don't know: 8 August 1918.
Hans-Hasso von Bismarck: 22 June 1941 near Tauroggen
Busso von Bismarck: 14 August 1941 near Leningrad (Hans-Hasso's brother)
Friedrich von Bismarck: 18 November 1943 near Pozzili, Abruzzia, Italy
Wilhelm von Bismarck: 1 May 1945 at Wismar

Graf Friedrich von Bismarck-Osten: 9 February 1941 at Krefeld (DOW)

Generalmajor Georg von Bismarck was commander of the 21. Panzerdivision and was killed in August 1942 by British mortar fire in a series of battles in the area of Alam Halfa.

Georg Stumme died of a heart attack.

Heinrich von Prittwitz und Gaffron killed in April 1941 was the son of Admiral à la suite Curt von Prittwitz und Gaffron.

Perils of relying on memory instead of Google. I knew Bismarck died at El Alamein and I remembered a general died of a heart attack, but was hazy on who was who.
