I'm somewhat puzzled about Böhm-Ermolli's entry in the 1941 DAL because it lists him in the "In der Rangliste weiterzuführen" / "Die Uniform eines Regiments usw. tragen" section as GFM mit RDA vom 31.01.1918 (which of course is his RDA as Austrian FM), but does NOT mention a Charakter. He appears in just the same manner as Mackensen, but not with a "Char." prefix like Epp, Beck, Adam and nine other Generals. In fact, while the Charakter ranks were usually one rank above the last full rank of the officers concerned, Böhm-Ermolli was already a full FM since 1918 and a Charakter would nearly seem a demotion. But almost every source about him mentions the Charakter, so there must be some substance to it.

Thank you very much! But the 1935 DAL (E) shows Morsbach with a RDA as Oberst (E) of 01.02.1929. In any case, in 1933 he can only have been a L-Offizier. E-Offiziere were introduced on 05.03.1935. But it is the date of his retirement that really matters for me. Thanks again!

His wife was born in Ortenberg, and married Ziegler there. However, there is no entry for Ziegler in the Standesamt Ortenberg, so presumably he did not die there.

Weineck is listed as a Tannenberg general (see above, page 1). I would have assumed that he got his Charakter as Generalarzt (then called "Generalstabsarzt") when he retired (probably on 01.04.1931). Can we be sure about Tannenberg? Why were Ärzte included at all? I thought the Tannenberg promotions were intended for PLM winners etc.

P.S. Weineck was promoted to full GA z.V. on 01.02.1941 (mit RDA vom 01.11.1940).

Volksbund has him and (I take his wife) Gertrud to have died on 26.4.1945 and buried next to each other at Waldfriedhof, Berlin-Zehlendorf. Wonder if the old Ritter der Pour le Mérite was somehow attached to the Volkssturm?

Hello,

According to his Sterbeurkunde, Johow committed suicide on 26.04.1945 by shooting himself in his house in Dahlem.

I do not like to speculate, but I think that a 83-year-old retired general would be too old, even by Endkampf standards, to have anything to do with the Volkssturm.

You are probably right, and the fact that his wife died at his side would confirm this assumption.

According - again - to the relevant Sterbeurkunde, his wife (Gertrude Johow, geb. Lunsdaine, who was born on 31.03.1869 in Edinburgh) also died on 26.04.1945 in Dahlem, cause of death given as suicide by gunshot.
