Captured German Railway Gun Used To Repair Destroyed Railway Bridge - Southern France 1944

Post by Richard Stone » 11 Aug 2022 18:16

The attached short article discusses the conversion of a captured German 270 mm railway gun to repair a destroyed railway bridge at the town of Aix in Southern France. The entire gun and the railway bogies (the railway wheel assemblies) were removed to provide access to the gun carriage. The carriage then was lengthened and installed on the remaining bridge abutments which were reinforced for additional strength.

This type of improvised bridge repair was common through all theaters of the European campaign since the US Army's Military Railway Service units, the Combat Engineer units and General Engineer Service units had specialized bridge repair groups in their organization.

The article was copied from the US Army WW2 'Green Book’ series 'The Corps Of Engineers - The War Against Germany’, pages 451 & 453.

I’ve posted a duplicate of this post in the site section ‘USA 1919 - 1945’ under the title 'US Military Railway Operation - Captured German Rail Gun Used To Repair Destroyed Railway Bridge - Southern France 1944' since it discusses the repair and operation of the US Army’s Military Railroads.
