Do you think that Khomeini would have settled for an outcome similar to post-2003 Iraq in real life or would it be necessary to have a Shi'a theocracy as opposed to a Shi'a democracy in Iraq?

Hi futurist,

The US had tied its own hands.

It had only got some Arab allies on board to legitimise the operation by agreeing to go no further than liberate Kuwait. It couldn't openly try to overthrow Saddam without reneging on that. That is why it had to hope that he was weakened enough that internal opposition could do the job unaided. It couldn't.

Cheers,

Sid

Well, to be fair, the US could have at least provided airstrikes or something, as with NATO in Libya in 2011 in real life.

Hi Futurist,

The same limitations would apply to air strikes, if they were designed to overthrow Iraq's government, or had the effect of doing so.

Cheers,

Sid

Greetings From Iran, mate.

and about Your question; No, There was no plan for aftermath back then. Before 1979 events, there were series of plans, both military and political plans were ready to execute, if necessary.

More specific to your Question, Iraq was first country in Asia (probably World) that send his regards to Khomeini after regime change.

Does anyone here know if Iran had ever made any concrete plans about what it was going to do next if it would have won the Iran-Iraq War? For instance, was invading Kuwait and/or eastern (Shi'a-majority) Saudi Arabia ever on the table for Iran in such a scenario?
Just for media and propaganda usage, Yes! It was told that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and Holy Cities (Karbala, most important one, followed by Najaf and Samera) need liberation from Infidels.

But in field, No there was no such plans during War!

1- But Iran could have ended the war in 1982

2- If all it wanted was survival, no?

3- Didn't Saddam offer to end the war in 1982 but Iran said "No!"

4- Because they wanted to overthrow Saddam?
1- We could, and had reasons to both accept peace and / or Continue War! But 2 main reasons that we continued fight, were as follow:

A- back then, a big part of our soil was under Occupation, We wanted to liberate our lands!

B- The Regime wanted that war continues, so more casualties means better propaganda for regime!

2- Survival? Iran is a walking dead (of its past) since February 1979!!!

3- Saddam offered a white peace to hide his defeat! He was told " we'll capture Khorramshahr in 1 day, Khuzestan in 3 days and we'll be in Tehran by weekend". They spent 34 days to fulfill their first object!!! also all fronts were (kind of) stationed by 1982!

4- In propaganda and daily news, Yes! but in Fact, no.

It would only count as a draw in your opinion. Someone else might consider expelling the Iraqis from Iran but refusing to take the war into Iraqi territory to be an Iranian victory.
I put it very simple:

We could, but we didn't ...

Why???

1- Lack of resources and Manpower! we were under sanctions, regime did many wrong things that damaged The Army!

according to Sources, total manpower of 92nd Armoured Division was 20699 men in 3 Brigades! On September 1980, The Division had a shortage of 5000 men, just in Ranks below Junior Sergeant (گروهبان سوم)!!!

2- Lack of Experienced and Knowledgeable Commanders, most of High ranking Officers were Killed / Executed / exiled / demoted / retired / in Prison or left Country.

3- Extensive interference by clerics and politicians in military affairs.

and so many other reasons ...

A work colleague was an Iranian soldier in that war. His artillery battalion lost nine out of twelve M110 guns to counter battery fire. It was a tough war.

IMHO the Iranians fought hard for their country.

Iran hope even before the war was to bring about an Islamic revolution throughout the Middle East, The war came about partially as a result of agitation from Tehran to the Iraqi Shi'ites to overthrown Saddam secular regime.
