Was this not also when Rommel's own Kampgruppe had to go into action as the New Zealander's launched their break out? Did not this incident take place at night? If so I recall many saying that the German's did not perform as well at night fighting as their Russian and Commonwealth counter parts. In fact it was one of the strong points of the 8th Army that it had extensively practiced night operations in Egypt. I'll have a look in the Rommel Papers to find a reference to it.
