Hats off to Gaius for this correct ID and shame on me for not noticing that this entire time (three years) he has already been identified in the English edition of Kumm's book, which I've browsed through numerous times. Again - a "bravo!" for Gaius. And shame on me :D

Hello,
I found this blog today, and it´s very interesting for my research. My grandfather was SS-Obersturmbannführer Walter Moreth member of 2. SS-Standarte Hessen and 7. SS-Freiwilligen-Gebirgs-Div. " Prinz Eugen".
My last information was that he was missed since Dec.1944/Jan.1945 after the battle from Budapest.
So I would appreciate if anybody here can forward me any infomations or photos about the destiny of my grandfather.
Thanks in advance

W. Moreth

Quote from the next page (page 23):
Doudou wrote:The portrait of the SS-Mann is from a french book 'Dictionnaire historique de la Luftwaffe et la Waffen-SS' (Editions Heimdal, at Bayeux, France). I think this soldier was a cadre of the 13.Waffen-Geb-Div. der SS "Handschar" because the author mentioned the Archives of Villefranche-sur-Ouergue, in France, (where a violent mutinery of elements of the SS-Geb.Pionier-Bat. 13 took place) like the original provenance of the photo.

Maybe (it's hard to tell from this angle, but he does look familiar). What is the source of the photo, please?

Thanks for the fast reply, Orlov (excellent image, by the way).

Anything written on the back / any other images from the same session?

Ivan

Thanks Ivan. I must sell this photo many years ago - at this moment I have only scan 600 dpi nad only this photo from the same session

For G. Trifkovic » Book of Kudlicka & Szewczyk is amazing in my opinion. This is 375 mostly unpublished photos taken by Kriegsberichter (SS-Uscha Eugen Nonnenmacher or SS-Hstuf. Anton Wickl, Hugo Kemps and Beinhauerm Homann, Keintzel and Kollick). MMP Books published also "Wiking on Caucasus" by Massimiliano Afiero.

All of the pictured men are photographers (Ostubaf. Bayer was a photographer as well). The Ostuf. is the commander of the division's war correspondent platoon (8. Zug, SS-KB-Abt.), Anton Wickl (so he didn't take these three particular photos, but they were taken with his camera). I don't know who the Oberleutnant is, but he is likely a commander of a Heer PK.

Ivan
