Hi Antonio,

oh, I see, Kurland ..., than he could have been back with H.Pz.Jg.Abt. 731 of course!

Do you have the newspaper this snippet was published? I'm highly interested in this one to be true ...

Hi Antonio, found him too lately and ...
Newspaper says "von Raden", his correct name was Unteroffizier Hinrich von Rahden.

He was a gun commander from Pz.Jg.Stug.Abt. 1005 already in 1944 (EK2 in August 1944), unit was referred to as Pz.Jg.Kp. 1005 in 1945. For sure the action mentioned in the newspaper earned him the EK1.

Unit was one of the first Sturmgeschütz-Kompanien within the Infanterie- and Jäger-Divisionen of the Wehrmacht, they got their first Sturmgeschütz III as early as September 1943. They continued throughout the war to use this type of tank up to March 1945 when 10 Panzer IV/70(A) were delivered!

s.Pz.Jg.Abt. 654 aces (equipped with Ferdinand tank destroyers in 1943, than with Jagdpanthers from 1944 to 1945).

Sources are these magnificent books:
"So kämpfte die 654", Manfred Dörr, VDM-Verlag 2010
"The Combat History of schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilung 654", Karl-Heinz Münch, J.J. Fedorowicz Publ. 2002

These books provide much more information in detail, but it's not the scope of this thread and I have no time to cover everything up to the last rivet :-)

They have copies of the recommendation for higher awards, plus detailed tank kill lists from Juni 1944 to mentioning the turret number, tank commander, gunner, type of target etc.

So, here's a summery of the higher awards:

Ritterkreuz

Lüders, Friedrich (Hptm.), Chef 2./s.Pz.Jg.Abt. 654 = 10 tanks at least
06.07.43 he destroyed 8 tanks with Ferdinand No. „601“.
18.07.44 he destroyed 1 M4 flamethrower.
30.07.44 Ritterkreuz action, with 9 Jagdpanther in 326. ID area, 10 tanks destroyed, 1 tank damaged.
31.07.44 his Kampfgruppe destroyed 1 APC and 2 tanks, 1 tank was damaged.
02.08.44 his Kampfgruppe destroyed 2 scout cars and 2 trucks.
03.08.44 his Kampfgruppe destroyed 6 tanks.
21.11.44 he destroyed 1 tank.

Ritterkreuz + Deutsches Kreuz in Gold

Schnepf, Wilhelm (Lt.), Fhr. x./s.Pz.Jg.Abt. 654 = 8 tanks at least
05.06.42 he destroyed 5 T34 with a Pak while with Pz.Jg.Abt. 8.
20.07.42 he destroyed 2 T34 with a Pak while with Pz.Jg.Abt. 8.
17.07.44 he destroyed 1 M4.
18.07.44 he damaged 1 M4 flamethrower (destroyed 3 M4 flamethrower with 2 Jagdpanther).
02.08.44 he instructed the tanks of a Kampfgruppe of Jagdpanther which destroyed 5 tanks.
06.08.44 he instructed a Kampfgruppe of 3 Jagdpanther which destroyed 3 tanks.
27.11.44 Ritterkreuz action, with 5 Jagdpanther in 198. ID area, 5 tanks and some A/T guns destroyed.
28.11.44 his Kampfgruppe destroyed 2 tanks.

Deutsches Kreuz in Gold

Scheiber, Erich (Lt.d.R.), Zugf. 3./s.Pz.Jg.Abt. 654 = 17 tanks at least plus 9 tanks as a gunner
He got the EK1 in August 1943 while employed with the Werkstatt-Kompanie of the Ferdinande.
31.07.44 he leads a Kampfgruppe of 3 Jagdpanther, than destroyed 6 tanks as a Richtschütze of 1 Jagdpanther, the other 2 Jagdpanthern than destroyed another 5 tanks.
08.08.44 after the Richtschützes of 2 Jagdpanther failed to find enemy tanks in their sights he manned a Jagdpanther and destroyed 1 tank as a Richtschütze.
12.08.44 he destroyed 2 tanks.
21.11.44 he overrun some A/T guns and leads his group of Jagdpanther to 2 tank kills plus 1 scout car.
26.11.44 he destroyed 1 tank.
27.11.44 he destroyed 2 tanks.
28.11.44 he destroyed 2 tanks.
30.11.44 he destroyed 5 tanks.
23.01.45 he destroyed a APC.
24.01.45 he destroyed 5 tanks before he was killed that day.

Brockhoff, Wilhelm (Ofw.), Jägerführer 2./s.Pz.Jg.Abt. 654 = 18 tanks at least
18.07.42 he destroyed 4 out of 24 tanks with a Pak.
02.08.42 he destroyed 2 T34 and 2 Mk. III with a Pak.
24.07.43 he destroyed 3 T34, 1 KWI, 1 truck and many A/T guns with his Ferdinand „632“.
11.07.44 he destroyed 1 M4, 1 A/T gun with his Jagdpanther, than was wounded.
22.11.44 he destroyed 2 tanks.
26.11.44 he destroyed 2 tanks.
30.11.44 he destroyed 1 tank.
Altogether he had 18 tank kills after the EK1 award and many A/T guns to his credit when rewarded for the DKiG.

Heyn, Günther (Lt.), Zugführer 2./s.Pz.Jg.Abt. 654 = 9 tanks at least
He got the EK1 in August 1943 while employed with the Ferdinande of the Abteilung in 1943.
30.07.44 he destroyed 3 Churchill II in the 276. ID sector.
02.08.44 he destroyed 5 tanks in the 326. ID sector.
03.08.44 he destroyed 1 tank, his own Jagdpanther was heavily damaged but brought back by him
25. to 27.11.44 he blocked a allied supply route with 3 Jagdpanther near the Swiss border, losing his own Jagdpanther during that timespan, than he successfully was able to bring back his remaining Jagdpanthers trough a couple of bazooka teams.
He died 12.1.1945.

Hermann Feldheim (Lt.d.R.), Zugführer 1./s.Pz.Jg.Abt. 654 = 19 tanks at least
His EK1 recommendation was written on 12.7.1943, he got that award on 19.7.1943.
In between that:
17.07.43 he destroyed 11 T34 out of more than 50 tanks with his Ferdinand „511“ at Poniry.
22.07.43 he destroyed 2 tanks and during that day he fife (!) times had to change his Ferdinand tank destroyers after they were hit by artillery fire.
At Kursk during operation „Zitadelle“ he destroyed 16 tanks altogether.
19.08.44 he destroyed 1 Cromwell in the 85. ID sector.
25.11.44 he destroyed 1 tank with Jagdpanther „112“ (2 tanks with his 3 Jagdpanthers) in the sector of Pi.Btl. 269.
03.12.44 he lead a Kampfgruppe of 6 Jagdpanther. His own Jagdpanther was hit, he entered another one, than his Kampfgruppe destroyed 2 tanks and 1 A/T gun, during a later attack he was wounded by artillery fire.

Addendum:
13.04.45 he was employed with 1./Pz.Ausb.Abt. 20 near Cloppenburg, personally destroying 1 tank with his Jagdpanther (his Kampfgruppe had 1 Jagdpanther, 1 Hetzer, 1 Panzer III) available.

Carl Bath (Uffz.), Jägerführer 2./s.Pz.Jg.Abt. 654 = 11 tanks at least plus 15 as a gunner
19.12.42 he destroyed 3 tanks as a Geschützführer (got the EK1).
05.07.43 he destroyed 3 tanks, 1 A/T gun as a Richtschütze.
06.07.43 he destroyed 5 T34, 3 A/T guns as a Richtschütze.
09.07.43 he destroyed 6 out of 8 tanks, than later another 1 KWI as a Richtschütze.
27.11.44 he destroyed 2 out of 4 M4 with Jagdpanther „212“
28.01.45 he destroyed 1 tank.
30.01.45 he destroyed 5 M4 with Jagdpanther „202“
His recommendation claims 23 tanks and several A/T guns killed by Bath after he got the EK1 (15 as a Richtschütze and 8 as a gun commander). With at least 3 tanks a Pak-Geschützführer he has a kill score mentioned above.

Deutsches Kreuz in Gold, recommended, but not awarded.

Kutschke, Herbert (Uffz.), Jägerführer 1./s.Pz.Jg.Abt. 654 = 4 tanks at least plus 18 as a gunner
08.07.43 he destroyed 11 tanks as a Richtschütze in a Ferdinand.
15.07.43 he destroyed 7 tanks as a Richtschütze – he got the EK1 on 31.7.1943.
25.08.44 he defended the last available ferry over the Seine river at Elbeuf (still as a Richtschütze).
22.11.44 as a Jägerführer he destroyed 2 M4 and another heavy tank with his Jagdpanther.
03.12.44 as a Jägerführer he destroyed 1 Lorraine-tank, 1 A/T gun, 1 APC and 1 car.
The recommendation from 6.12.1944 claims 22 tanks (18 tanks as a Richtschütze), 1 Pak, 1 APC and 1 car destroyed by Kutschke.

I may find other "aces" or have slight corrections after analysing the detailed tank kills list from these two books.

Gentlemen,

Do you have information of a number of tank kills for Oberleutnant der Reserve Walter Maier who was born in 1919 and was a German Cross in Gold holder. He was acting commander of 2./Stu.Gesch.Brig. GD.

Do you have career information about a panzer ace named Ludwig Obermeier who was an Oberfeldwebel and was a holder of the German Cross in Gold? How many enemy tanks he destroyed?

Hello Antonio,

well, the recommendation has to be read as this 12 tanks where the company score (well, at least 2 or 3 Sturmgeschütze), not the personal score of Lt. Kercher alone.

He could well have had more than 12 or 20 tanks to his credit, but the action described is not his personal total.

Ah, this is another case of a Pak-Zugführer, 5 tanks apiece being the score of the Pak-Sfl. from Uffz. Oelze and from Uffz. Ackmann, another 4 tanks being damaged by these 2 Sfl. (field modifications).

Ofw. Meusgeier directed these Sfl., but the gun commanders where Oelze and Ackmann.

So, die Ofw. Meusgeier have a personal score at all?

:-)
