Collaboration between Tiger and other weapons

Post by Aida1 » 27 Aug 2022 18:08

"Commanding general III pz corps. Corps HQ 21.07.1943
Ia Nr 1549/43 secret

Based on the experiences of the last combats I give the following tips for the collaboration of Tiger with other weapons:
1)Because of its high performance gun and its strong armor, the Tiger is to be used in the first place against enemy tanks and At weapons and only in second place-very exceptionally against infantry targets. It's armament allows it to combat enemy tanks with great success - as experience showed-even on ranges of 2000 m and more, which had a particular moral effect on the enemy. Because of its strong armor, it can move very close to enemy tanks without having strong damage from shooting. For the Tiger it remains to be aimed at taking up the tank combat at ranges of over 1000 m.
The deployment of the Tiger is to be preceded, insofar as the situation allows it, - which was mostly the case in the latest fighting- a recce of the terrain above all concerning the crossability of river and streams, bridges and marsch areas. Company and platoon commanders as well as tank commanders should not shy away from dismounting and do the recce on foot to avoid that whole units get stuck on such difficult terrain. Many times this has lead to pointless losses of Tiger through mines which could have been avoided. The same is valid for the other tanks"

"2) A certain weakness of the Tiger is that through the arrangement of the commander cupola on the left side of the turret the visibility for the commander is bad at close ranges and to this side a considerable dead angle develops, which carries the danger of attack at close range by the enemy. This results in the requirement for the other weapons to protect the Tiger from this danger which is detailed hereafter.
APC, Sturmgeschutze, light and medium tanks must during the attack at first closely follow the Tiger to secure the Tiger towards the flanks and later the exploit the success of the Tiger, but above all in the combat in parts of battle zone occupied by infantry eliminate the endangering of the Tiger by close combat troops. The grenadiere have to exploit the high moral and effective impact of the break-in of the Tiger and the other tanks APC and Sturmgeschutze in the enemy main combat line to advance immediately and comb through the defense lines because otherwise the danger exists that when the tanks drive on,the resistance by enemy infantry flares up again and unnecessary losses occur with the Grenadiere.
It is not only the mission of the APC, Sturmgeschutze, light and medium tanks to automatically execute the protection of the Tiger against close combat troops but in an even more broad way the mission of all weapons, especially Grenadiere and engineers to support the Tiger in this. Tiger are less exposed to this in clear open terrain. "

"During the attack on 0507, in one sector of the corps, the ignorance about the laying of own mines before the front had a bad effect on the Tiger. Because of this and later insufficient clearing by the engineers, a lot of vehicles hit mines so that the Tiger company which was deployed there was almost completely disabled in the first stage of the battle. The loss of the Tiger company in the division that attacked in the center of gravity was a great disadvantage in the first two days of the offensive. A special emphasis has to be put on the training of engineers in the careful clearing of mines and the setting of lanes. With foresight sufficient engineers have always to be added to the forward battlegroups not only to take away obstacles, especially also for mine clearing because experience learns that at tankditches, towns and choke points in the depth of the defense zone, there is always the danger of mines.
4)I forbid the use of tanks and also the Tiger under company strength. In the defense the tanks are to be kept together-assembled in intervention groups-to deploy them united in counterattack in case of enemy breakthrough. After the execution of the counterattack these tank groups are to be pulled out immediately to the disposal of the sector commander, respectively the division. The splitting up of individual tanks or tank groups as the positioning in the main line of combat, as the securing of other weapons in daylight and night is to be omitted.
5) This order is to be destroyed after taking cognizance of it.,.. "
