Panzerbekämpfung P 40 on Crete

Post by Brady » 29 Oct 2020 21:30

I had thought, that the FJ had deployed to Crete with a HEAT Rifle grenade, and that that was the:

Panzerbekämpfung P 40 (Gewehr-Granatpatrone 40) GG/P 40

But... Did they and was that the One they used ?

...................................

The "Gewehrgranate zur Panzerbekämpfung P 40" seems to have been produced from 1940 to 1942 essentially, it was normally issued to Luftwaffe units (Fallschirmjäger).

A collogue of mine came up with " The LL Sturmregiment had some as they had received 450 pieces in early May 41. "

Ideally a picture of one on Crete...

Does anybody know when they removed theGerman heat rifle grenades from Service I know that the standard version came out sometime at the end of 42 but was essentially, immediately, obsolete, were they still in service as late as 44? Any of them?

As late as CRUSADER, a personal order by Hitler forebade the issuance of HEAT ammunition to guns in the frontline, for fear of them being captured and the mechanics studied and replicated by the enemy.

Given this, I have doubts that they would have allowed them to drop on Crete with this type of ammunition.
The enemy had superiority in numbers, his tanks were more heavily armoured, they had larger calibre guns with nearly twice the effective range of ours, and their telescopes were superior. 5 RTR 19/11/41

!, o, WoW I did not know that, I wonder if the arrival of Italian HEAT rounds on the battlefield that is what finally made him reverse that order?
