Panzer-Nahkampf-Brigade "Hitlerjugend" - Volkssturm
by lutrebois » 05 May 2019, 22:51
Helmut Möckel was the first Commander, and after he was killed in a motor accident Artur Axmann - that is nominally - took over.
Since Axmann was in Berlin the real Commander was Otto Kern.
After training in ZOSSEN and WÜNSDORF, early in April 1945 the brigade came under the command of the 9th Army. The map shows all the places where missing persons gave a last sign of life in April.
The overall picture gives the impression that the 1st and 2nd battalions were deployed southeast of Berlin. The third battalion was located east of the city and the fourth was concentrated near STRAUSBERG.
The BERLIN cluster is explained by the fact that after the training the brigade was probably transported via BERLIN to the operational areas. This does not mean that all these missing persons have stayed in the city permanently.
The Russian offensive began on 16 April. In the north of the 9th Army zone the German positions were ruptured on 18-19 April. The advance of the Soviets reached Berlin on 21 April.
Both Axmann and Buddrus mention units of the Panzer-Nahkampf-Brigade HJ, which fought in BERLIN near the Heerstraße and the Kaiserdamm.
Hans Holzträger : " ... when the Soviets had broken through at FRANKFURT a.d. Oder, the unit marched to BAD SAAROW - STORKOW. From here it went with Berlin buses via KÖNIGSWUSTERHAUSEN to BERLIN to the Olympic Village. Here a battalion was deployed against the approaching Soviets. Other sub-units, the Soviets always on their heels, fought their way to HAVELBERG via FRIESACK - FEHRBELLIN - ALTRUPPIN - NEURUPPIN ...".
"... In HAVELSBERG the IV Battalion Panzervernichtungsbrigade HJ, defended the bridges and a large part of the city…"
The Russian breakthrough in the southeast of Berlin, in the zone in which the 1st and 2nd battalions probably operated, did not succeed until about 22/23 April. At that time fights already took place in BERLIN (east and north side). The third and fourth battalions had already been pushed out of their positions.
Since the fourth battalion was in HAVELBERG at the end of April, it is very likely that it was the third battalion which was deployed in CHARLOTTENBURG.
