Re: German snipers and sharpshooters
Friedrich Pein (October 20, 1915–February 14, 1975) was a renowned German sniper during World War II, and one of three to have been awarded the Ritterkreuz (the other two being Josef Allerberger and Matthias Hetzenauer).
The son of a farmer, he enlisted in the Wehrmacht in October 1938. His first combat role came as a sniper in the 12th company Gebirgsjägerregiment 143 serving in the Soviet Union.
At the start of 1944, he was transferred to the 2nd Company Jagerregiment 227 where he served in Grubinger Group. He was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class on December 1st, and eight days later was awarded the 1st Class.
On February 28, 1945, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross marking his 200th kill as a sniper, and that spring also saw him awarded the Close Combat Clasp.
Total 209 kills.

Re: German snipers and sharpshooters
Hello carius,
take a look also please on page 1 of this thread where a preliminary "master list" was installed a time ago. This is intended to get confirmed data sets for as much as possible snipers by gathering all info and material available. Ideally going beyond wikipedia, though I don't reject this basically ; but it is not a source and in any case what's written there needs a re-check.
One major point of interest are the number of kills of course but also all other aspects (Bio, service, etc.). I'm much in delay to go on with this.
Pein and Allersberger (please notice also the KC situation with further explanation) have been listed for the start.
Best regards
Bernd

Re: German snipers and sharpshooters
The chief of staff of the XXXXIX Mountain Corps on 20 April 1945 was Oberstleutnant Franc Vogl [spelledt Voigt in one document]. He had replaced Oberst Ludwig Eimannsberger on 14 April 1945.

Re: German snipers and sharpshooters
Thanks jjmcgr !
According to the description of the scene in "Im Auge des Jägers" a jovial man, conducting the ceremony without loud and wild speeches and no word about the "Endsieg" or future kills or something like that. He cared about the health of the both and asked for a wish they could have. Allerberger and Roth didn't know what to say.

Eimannsberger was probaby replaced because he got wounded. At the end of the war, only a couple of weeks later, he was listed as being in the officer holding pool (Fuehrer Reserve) which is where wounded officers usually went until they recooperated.
