All evidence points to Sepp Allerberger.

Hej!
Jag undrar vem som var den tyske sniper som uppnådde mest kills på den Västra fronten, den Östra verkar ju vara mycket reserchad. Det vore också intressant att veta England och Amerikas snipers kills.

I believe the latest reprint of "Im Auge des Jaegers" indicates that Franz Karner is a pseudonym for Josef Sepp Allerberger (note spelling of his surname). The purpose of the ruse was primarily to protect Allerberger's identity and origins should anybody want to seek him or his family out for reprisal. Therefore in the book he was represented as a German from Mittenwald whereas he is a native of Salzburg. Allerberger fought alongside Franz Roth, who was also 3.Geb.Div. Both these snipers were awarded the Knights Cross by FM Schoerner as an unusual alternative to the German Cross in Gold.

Before you would be sent to a "sniper"school, there was some preliminary testing at unit level. As a "good shooter" I was selected to participate in one of these. When it came to bullseyes, I could not miss, as soon as we got silhouettes and/or pop-ups, I placed in not lethal areas, or missed completely. After about two weeks, the Oscha in charge determined that "I just did not have it" and sent me back to regular duty. Did get some emblem for my sleeve though, but never wore it.
Oh well. HN.

Gentlemen,
I know there was a sniper named Roth who scored over 200 kills on the Eastern Front. I read it in a magazine I believed called "World War II." Could it be that Franz Roth of the 3rd Mountain Division is that 'Roth'?
Sincerely,
Edward
