Heinkel He 111 questions

Post by Sturm78 » 26 May 2022 21:28

Hi all,

It can be seen in wartime images of the Heinkel He 111P variant, two different models of engine exhausts.

Do these different exhausts indicate any particular subvariant of the P model?
Or maybe some particular sub-variant of the DB601 engine?
Or maybe they can be a difference between initial models and final models of the P-model?

:? :?

Possible one is a tropical exhaust,(the top one maybe) there are several www sites on He111 and varients, use BING and be exact in search and I think you might find answer

2nd image may be of an older model or one in a second line duty. I doubt they'd want to lose the performance gain from the jet exhausts in frontline units

Hi all

According to my information, all subvariants of the He 111P had DB601A engines except the P-6, that introduced the DB601N engine...
Perhaps, the exhausts type of the plane of my second image are tipical of the early versions with DB601A engine and the exhaust type of the aircraft of my first image are of the DB601N engines (P-6 variant) ????

Well, here another question about the He 111

Does somebody know what subvariant of the He 111H bomber introduced the wide blade propellers ??

Wide blade wooden props are associated with Jumo 211F engines, external bomb racks were available with H-4. Don't know if H-4 was already powered-up with the 211F

I have a question, at least one version of the 111 had a tail machinegun, and I have heard either it was remote controlled with a small firing arc, or it was remotely fired and in a static mount. Which is the truth?

Hi Denniss,

I have found contradictory information according to the sources. :?

Some sources say that early H-4 bombers has Jumo 211D engines but later H-4 copies had the Jumo 211F engine already.
Other sources say that the Jumo 211F engine was introduced with the H-6 variant.....

Thank you very much for these docuemnts, Junker :)

I don't speak German but from what I can deduce from the text it seems that the Jumo 211F engine was introduced with the H-6 variant, which also introduced the Junkers VS propeller.
Is this propeller model the one with wide blades of my last photo?

That's definitely a wider prop blade than the metal ones used on the earlier versions.
And you can't simply upgrade an older model with a newer engine due to change of the engine cooling system, 211F/J introduced a pressurized water cooling system.

Thanks, Denniss

So, all He 111 bombers with wide blade propellers are H-6 or later models....

see the list above - H-8 to 10 based on older bomber models
But should be true for the main production variants
