Imperial War Museum (IWM), London

Post by Natter » 05 Apr 2021 14:04

The Imperial War Museum library has loads of material in several collections - especially regarding technical documents relating weapons, firecontrol +++.

However, it seems "impossible" to get hold of copies there. Current lockdown aside, the research room has normally very limited opening hours, and their photocopyservice is at best just a theoretical service (as far as my experience can tell, with no response to my orders so far).

Here are some collections where there are hundreds of files I'd like copies of:

https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item ... 1030013221

https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item ... 1030013279

https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item ... 1030013293

https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item ... 1030013280

Have any of the members here had any luck obtaining material from IWM, and/or know of someone that offer copying service there - like for instance @rcre at TNA (yes, I have tried, but he can't be pursuaded to visit IWM despite the statement on his website...).

Are there item-by-item descriptions of these collections?

My limited experience with IWM is they don't own that many original documents. It's often just copies of what can be found in TNA, NARA or BAMA. This is especially true of German documents, many of them were actually returned to the Bundesarchiv. I don't think of IWM as the most relevant place for research, unless you live nearby.

The "Halstead Exploiting Centre" may be one of the few collections only to be found in IWM. However, the BIOS etc. files must be in TNA somewhere.

Judging from what others have said on other forums IWM doesn't have a good reputation for helping people accessing files and they are not cheap either.

I know IWM (at least the library) are understaffed and underfunded (?). As they obviously not are a primary archival institution, it makes sense they can't offer similar public services like you have at TNA.
In my opinion, these unique collections should be transferred to TNA so they can (actually) be accesible to the public.
