Researching at the NIMH in Holland - researchers available?

Post by Gary Kennedy » 15 Mar 2020 20:54

I was wondering if anyone on the forum may know whether it's possible to hire a researcher to visit the Netherlands Institute for Military History (NIMH), ideally with a digital camera so they copy a publication for me, or at the very least parts of it? This assumes that the NIMH actually allows access to and copying of its records.

I've no idea about hiring a researcher in Holland, or if there are any that specialise in the NIMH, so if anyone does and can give me a starter it would be much appreciated.

Obviously at time of writing I'm assuming that Europe will reopen for normal activities at some point in time.

Thanks,

Gary

Gary,
I have not been to the NIMH recently, you have to plan a visit today because a lot of the documents are not at the archive it self.
So these need to be collected at the storage of the archive, while years back I would just call and hop on the motorbike but the "new" way takes planning for two weeks.
Scanning (you have to take your own scanner), copying and even making photo's is possible, even while it is military terrain.
Send me a mail and maybe I can help you with what we have so far, at the moment the archive is shut due to Corona but some parts of the archive material is downloadable.
Greetings Jack.

Gary, I am in the area on a fairly regular basis and could free up some hours for you. For now they will probably remain closed. Not clear when that will end.
Last time I was there ((4 years ago I think) photographs were not allowed. I had to use an old fashion copier and scanned they copies myself at home.

First off thanks to you both for your replies. I only just checked back on the thread last night and hadn't realised there were any responses before then.

As you both mention we're waiting for such places to begin to open up again and then see what their new access rules will be. I was talking with someone recently who lives nearby and has intimated they might be able to make a trip and at least look at the document I'm interested in (it falls within their own research as well and I'd still like confirmation it is what I'm after). I understand what you mean about items being stored offsite. I'm hoping this one is actually there as the archivist said he was looking at it as he typed up the email to tell me I couldn't see it!

I'm hoping the kindly offered recce will still go ahead but I don't know when that might be. I can PM the basic details to you both if you want and you can decide if it's something you can help with.

Thanks again,

Gary
