Is there a breakdown or index of the files contained within the Vopersal Nachlass? The BA Invenio site contains only an overview of the collection?
Thanks

Re: Vopersal Nachlass index/contents
What are the Vopersal papers, for those (like me) who never heard of it?

It is the heritage of Wolfgang Vopersal ( chonik der Totenkopf), about 43 or 48 Aktenmeter of his research about Waffen-SS. In bad state....

Indeed. Many picture are taken out (stolen?) and there's no real index

That's a great shame. Looks like a trip to Freiburg at some point then, unless someone else has been who tooks notes on the contents...Piet Duits wrote: ↑27 Dec 2019 12:13Indeed. Many picture are taken out (stolen?) and there's no real index

Hi RichD-M,
What units are you interested in???
Indeed, there is no index. Wolfgang Vopersal (ex-Totenkopf Division, he started right after the war to collect information from former Waffen-SS comrades from ANY Waffen-SS unit. Some files are from primary sources. But he also added his personal perception of the info he obtained from the correspondence with veterans, which are useful sometimes, but should be regarded CRITICALLY AS WELL!!!!
Personally, I am interested in the Waffen-SS MOUNTAIN units. I got a lot of USEFUL information from the Vopersal archives, but be critical all the way!!!!
Apart from the Vopersal Archives, you should also visit Freiburg for the (few) war diaries that remained. In Invenio divisional histories of Waffen-SS divisions start with the code RS 3/(div. no.).
Apart from that: the city of Freiburg itself is really worth a visit itself!!!! It's a beauty!!!
With regard to hotels:
Closest to the Militärachiv is "Green City Hotel Vauban" (5 min.). I'm sure they will speak English there.
However, I have good experiences with "Landsgasthof "Frohe Einkehr" in the southern Freiburg suburb of Merzhausen: Good room and food, friendly staff, 10-15 min. to the Militärarchiv, Worth while and a lot cheaper!
Let me know any specific questions, if necessary by pm!
Frans
