Hello there,
I am curious about how Public Transport in Berlin performed during wartime.
From what i could find, U-Bahn usage was very high due to less car usage and were used as Air Raid shelters, and the system operated until 25th of April 1945 when the power station supplying the network failed,
and a special type of tram was developed with a simpler design (Kriegsstraßenbahnwagen)
But i am curious about how many stations were in service when the U-Bahn was halted, and what was the experience riding the U-Bahn during the last days of its operation in wartime, and also about when the Tram services were halted
I'm also curious about how Buses performed during wartime, as I can't find any good sources about them,
Thanks

Re: Public Transport in Berlin during wartime
Thanks very much for the site, but who used the U-Bahn during the last days of its operation? Elderly people? Volkssturm riding into the front? or were the trains empty?
Also, a source on the Buses during wartime would be great
Thanks

Hi seungseung22,
thanks for your interesting topic, just two internet links for a start:
Geschichte der Straßenbahn in Berlin: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geschicht ... _in_Berlin
Straßenbahn Berlin: http://www.berliner-verkehrsseiten.de/s ... -1949.html
As always, there are hundreds of links and just as many photos to your question online, mostly in German language of course, but as always, that is in the nature of your question.

Unfortunately, I don't know the details, but the many photos speak for themselves...
