Just like to know what the theories are about this. A popular one is that an American officer smuggled a cyanide capsule in to him. Or, it could have been his wife. Obviously, he must have received the pill from somewhere, but where?

My recollection is that Göring asked the American guard who had treated him in a friendly fashion to bring pieces of his luggage stored on the prison grounds to his cell, knowing that he had hidden a cyanide capsule among his possessions...and hoping that that capsule had not been discovered when he had been taken prisoner. The rest is history.

Sorry, Alpini, but that story sounds very hokey to me. It sounds like the prison guard created a "CYA" story which couldn't be checked, in order to avoid personal punishment. My posting above sounds like it's closer to the truth of this matter.
