HJ/BDM visit to Finland, summer 1938...

Post by Harro » 22 Nov 2021 14:04

Hi all,

I'm looking for any information about the visit of a large delegation from the Hitlerjugend and Bund Deutscher Mädel to Finland during the summer of 1938 or where to find more info.

Thanks in advance!

There was some co-operation between Hitlerjugend and "Blackshirts", the youth organization of the right wing Patriotic People's Movement (IKL). They have probably taken part in summer camps, which were last time arranged in 1938. There was also a small Hitlerjugend section at the German School in Helsinki. Blackshirts had a magazine "Luo lippujen", which should be digitized, but unfortunately the site is not available at the moment.

Thanks Seppo,

was there some kind of europe-wide over-organization for the fascist and national right-wing youth organizations of the time, if so, how was all this organized ?

Any detail would be interesting, I am unfortunately not aware of anything on this subject ?

My Grandfather joined the Jungdeutsche Jugend, the youth organisation of the Jungdeutscher Orden as a teenager already, the Jungdeutscher Orden was banned, after the 1933 takeover of power in the year 1933.
Their former intention was "Deutschnational".

I own a small handfull of photos from my grandfather as a teenager, wearing the typical outfit, with special caps starring emblems of the former organisation.

Thanks Seppo, thats a great start for the overal contacts between the Fins and the Germans. I hope someone can shed a light on this particular visit in 1938. It is possible that the German delegation came from East Prussia only.

I found this book The Hitler Youth and the World in Hungarian (sorry, don't understand any), which looks interesting.

I browsed 1938 volume of the Luo Lippujen magazine and found two articles of Finns visiting Hitlerjugend camps In Köslin and Wollin (both now in Poland).

Sounds like it was a two-way system, with Finns visiting Germany and Germans visiting Finland. My subject was part of the German delegation during the HJ/BDM visit to Finland in 1938.

If you look page 528 of the Hungarian book, there is a table of all HJ visits in Finland. In 1938 there seems to be only three.
Danzig (HJ) 1938 Baltikum
Kurmark (BDM) 1938.06. Helsinki, Booro (Porvoo?)
Kurmark (DJ) 1938.07. Helsinki

Excellent, I suppose the delegation from Danzig or Kurmark could easily have included HJ and BDM members from East Prussia. My subject was in the HJ and he met his future wife who was with a group of eight BDM-girls who represented Obergau Ostland 1.
