Is it true Hitler's colonial demands were a ruse?

I read that Hitler only demanded colonies so that when England & France protested he would offer to let them keep them for a free hand in the east, and that he was displeased when Ribbentrop's demands backfired and England offered the opposite deal, they would share (or "pool) their colonies in exchange for Germany not expanding in Europe. How much of this true, and how much speculation?
