Hans Burtscher's memoir

Post by billholland » 03 Nov 2011 03:07

Hi, all--

I am a screenwriter desperate to get my hands on a copy of "Die politisch Unzuverlässigen" a wartime memoir by Hans Burtscher, an Austrian member of a unit called Hochgebirgsjägerbataillon 4. He later wrote a wonderful memoir of his service in northern Italy entitled "A Report from the Other Side," but I'm convinced the book mentioned above would give me a more in-depth picture of this remarkable man.

To the Administrator:

I'm wondering if I placed my message on the most appropriate board as Burtschers' book covers post-Anschluss Austria.

Best,

Bill,

the book is listed as available in various library catalogues. You should be able to order a copy through inter-library loan. As I don't know where you're writing from, I can just offer a few locations.

For example, the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek holds two copies:
Burtscher, Hans: Die politisch Unzuverlässigen. Dokumentarische Tagebuchaufzeichnungen 1933-1946 (Bludenz 1985).
Frankfurt, shelfmark D 89/6327
Leipzig, shelfmark 1986 A 28082

Other copies are in the Library of the University of Vienna (shelfmark I-1079611), or the British Library (shelfmark YA.1990.a.19855)

Hi Bill,

Your weary search during so many years has finally proven to be fruitful.
I doubt that Hans' self-edited "Die politisch Unzuverlässigen" biography is anywhere available since
his death, except from his only survivor whom you have now made out.
He was, indeed, an outstanding, remarkable person in every respect and certainly a "reliable" witness.
In fact, the title "Die politisch Unzuverlässigen" (The Politically Unreliable) was not the best choice and needs some
"insider" information to explain its signification.

I'm trying to connect with G. Burtscher regarding his father, Hans Burtscher. If he's still active on this forum and could contact me, it would be appreciated.
