Solider Photo Group Needs Identification

Post by sqnldr » 10 Jun 2020 14:33

Hi,

Found this other photo in among some feldpost. It's a nice group shot. Can anyone identify anything by the uniforms? I am guessing not but just checking.

There is a scribble on the back. Can anyone make any of it out?

Nothing special about them. Ranks look like privates or maybe corporals too, one sergeant and an officer. On the back looks like the ranks and names are scribbled. Might be Lt. (Leutnant) Rade, uffz. (Unteroffizier) Xxx, gefr. (Gefreiter) 1 and 2 and finally two “something” I can’t quite read/figure out.

How do you know when you don´t know their history?

It´s Lt. Radl, not Rade. And Uffz.
Then twice Gefr. and twice Schtz. what is "Schütze", simple solders. No corporal at all in thsi group.
The officer might be Dr. Adolf Radl (DOB 24.10.1913) who got KIA in 1941 near St. Petersburg as 1st Lieutenant or
Radl Ernst (DOB 27.12.1922) who got KIA in Mostar (Bosnia & Herzegovina) in Oct. 1944 also as 1st Lieutenant (Oberleutnant).
Or a person not listed yet in the grave search.

Thanks history1. My fraktur/sütterlin is lousy and the handwriting doesn‘t make it any easier.

Hi,

Here is what I read:

Die Besatzung v. W 5 Z

Lt. Radl, Uffz. Haber,
Gefr. Lindemann, Gefr. H......
Schtz. U......., Schtz. Hinzelberg.

The names are maybe not so important, more interesting would be to find out, what W5Z is:

A bunker, fortification maybe?

Best regards
Armin
