Kaigun Kokutai attacks on Lunga Airfield / Henderson Field in Aug.1942

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can provide additional information of the number of Japanese aircraft launched against
Lunga Airfield also known as Henderson Field at Guadalcanal
from August 7 to August 30 1942? Including the losses of aircraft.
So far, this is what I have gathered information from different books and War Diaries and Daily Journals from the 1st Marine Division at Fold3.
Five Japanese land squadrons and one carrier squadron participated in the Lunga Airfield attacks in early August.
Tainan Naval Air Corps with Type 0 carrier fighter
The 2nd Naval Air Corps with Type 99 carrier bomber
The 4th Naval Air Corps with Type 1 attack bomber
Misawa Naval Air Corps with Type 1 attack bomber
Kisarazu Naval Air Corps with Type 1 attack bomber
Ryujo Naval Air Corps with Type 97 carrier attack bomber and Type 0 carrier fighter


7 August 1942
At 1320,
27 x Type 1 Rikkō (Dai 4 Kaigun Kōkūtai)
17 x Type 0 Reisen (Tainan Kaigun Kōkūtai)
The bombers dropped bombs over the enemy invasion fleet of the coast of Guadalcanal.
No ship damages.
Four bombers shotdown.
One bomber ditched returning from mission.
One bomber crash-landed at Vunakanau Airfield at Rabaul.
Two fighters shotdown.
One fighter aborted the mission.
At 1450,
9 x Type 99 Kanbaku (Dai 2 Kaigun Kōkūtai)
The carrier bombers attacked the enemy invasion fleet of the coast of Guadalcanal.
Two enemy destroyers damaged.
Five carrier bombers shotdown.
Four carrier bombers crash-landed to the sea after the mission.

8 August 1942
At 1200,
17 x Type 1 Rikkō (Dai 4 Kaigun Kōkūtai)
9 x Type 1 Rikkō (Dai 2 Chutai Misawa Kaigun Kōkūtai)
15 x Type 0 Reisen (Tainan Kaigun Kōkūtai)
The bombers armed with torpedoes.
Three bombers of Dai 4 Kōkūtai aborted the mission.
The bombers attacked the enemy invasion fleet.
Damaged one enemy destroyer with one torpedo hit.
One bomber in a suicide dive crashed into one enemy transport.
Eleven bombers of Dai 4 Kōkūtai shotdown.
Six bombers of Dai 2 Chutai Misawa Kōkūtai shotdown.
One bomber of Dai 2 Chutai Misawa Kōkūtai heavily damaged crash-landed at
Vunakanau Airfield at Rabaul.
Three bombers of Dai 4 Kōkūtai heavily damaged returned to base.
Two bombers of Dai 2 Chutai Misawa Kōkūtai heavily damaged returned to base.

9 August 1942
16 x Type 1 Rikkō (Misawa Kaigun Kōkūtai)
unknown x Type 0 Reisen (Tainan Kaigun Kōkūtai)
The bombers armed with torpedoes.
The bombers unable to find the enemy invasion fleet.
The bombers attacked one enemy destroyer.
Sanked one enemy destroyer with two torpedo hits.
Two bombers shotdown.
One damaged bomber crash-landed at Buka Airfield in Bougainville.

10 August 1942
At 1315,
25 x Type 1 Rikkō (unknown Kaigun Kōkūtai)
12 x Type 0 Reisen (Tainan Kaigun Kōkūtai)
The bombers armed with torpedoes.
The bombers unable to find the enemy invasion fleet of the coast of Guadalcanal.
The bombers and fighters circled Lunga Airfield.
Four fighters flying low on reconnaissance over Lunga Airfield.

15 August 1942
At 1155,
6 x Type 1 Rikkō (unknown Kaigun Kōkūtai)
The bombers dropped bombs over Lunga Airfield. No damages.
Flew at about 2400 feet.
At 1510,
6 x Type 1 Rikkō (unknown Kaigun Kōkūtai)
Three bombers dropped bombs but no damages.
Three other bombers dropped six parachutes of ammunition and rations supplies.

18 August 1942
At 1300,
8 x Type 1 Rikkō (unknown Kaigun Kōkūtai)
The bombers dropped bombs over Lunga Airfield.
Three small bomb hits in runway.
Two large bomb hits along side of runway.
One hit on the airfield also on five drums of aviation gas.

21 August 1942
At 0807,
17 x Type 1 Rikkō (Misawa Kaigun Kōkūtai)
9 x Type 1 Rikkō (Dai 4 Kaigun Kōkūtai)
13 x Type 0 Reisen (Tainan Kaigun Kōkūtai)
departed Rabaul to bomb Lunga Airfield.
At 1140,
The bombers turned back and released the fighters to patrol over Lunga.
The fighters engaged with the newly arrived enemy fighters from Lunga Airfield.
All fighters returned to base.

24 August 1942
At 0830,
24 x Type 1 Rikkō (unknown Kaigun Kōkūtai)
14 x Type 0 Reisen (Tainan Kaigun Kōkūtai)
departed Rabaul to bomb Lunga Airfield.
All aircraft aborted the mission due to bad weather in the Solomon Islands.
At 1220,
6 x Type 97 Kankō (Ryujo Kaigun Kōkūtai)
6 x Type 0 Reisen (Ryujo Kaigun Kōkūtai)
9 x Type 0 Reisen (Ryujo Kaigun Kōkūtai)
departed the carrier Ryujo to bomb Lunga Airfield.
At 1425,
The Ryujo Kōkūtai bombed and straffed Lunga Airfield.
Three carrier attack bombers of Ryujo Kōkūtai shotdown.
One fighter of Ryujo Kōkūtai shotdown.

25 August 1942
At 1150,
9 x Type 1 Rikkō (Kisarazu Kaigun Kōkūtai)
8 x Type 1 Rikkō (Misawa Kaigun Kōkūtai)
6 x Type 1 Rikkō (Dai 4 Kaigun Kōkūtai)
unknown x Type 0 Reisen (Tainan Kaigun Kōkūtai)
The bombers dropped bombs over Lunga Airfield.
All bombers returned to base.

26 August 1942
4 x Type 1 Rikkō (Misawa Kaigun Kōkūtai)
4 x Type 1 Rikkō (Kisarazu Kaigun Kōkūtai)
unknown x Type 0 Reisen (Tainan Kaigun Kōkūtai)
The bombers dropped bombs over Lunga Airfield.
The bombers burned 2000 gallons of aviation fuel.
Two enemy 1000-lb bombs exploded and damaged several aircraft on the ground.
The enemy field radio station was damaged by the exploded bombs.
Two bombers of Kisarazu Kōkūtai shotdown.
One bomber of Kisarazu Kōkūtai ditched after bomb attack.
One bomber of Misawa Kōkūtai forced landed at Buka Airfield in Bougainville.

29 August 1942
At 1200,
9 x Type 1 Rikkō (Kisarazu Kaigun Kōkūtai)
9 x Type 1 Rikkō (Misawa Kaigun Kōkūtai)
The bombers dropped bombs over Lunga Airfield.
One bomber of Kisarazu Kōkūtai shotdown.
One bomber of Kisarazu Kōkūtai crash-landed at Buka Airfield in Bougainville.

30 August 1942
At 1230,
9 x Type 1 Rikkō (Kisarazu Kaigun Kōkūtai)
9 x Type 1 Rikkō (Misawa Kaigun Kōkūtai)
The bombers dropped bombs over the enemy supply fleet of the coast of Guadalcanal.
One enemy converted destroyer-transport sank.
All bombers returned to base.

No, thank you for providing this information. Hope everything you need turns up. The Japanese military preserved its records post war, but very little has been translated to English. Perhaps you may be able to access that.
