A Bridge To Far

Post by admfisher » 25 Aug 2002 04:40

Hello all,

Just watching the old movie again. This is the first time since I was a kid though. : (

But the weapons, uniforms, allied tanks, (great line up of Fireflys), even the Thunderbolts are great, that is if they are Thunderbolts.

But what the heck did the movies makers use for the German SS Recon attack that failed.
I mean the fake SdKfz 251's and the supposed assualt gun. The got the armor panels and such in the basic form but I cannot make out the actaual vehicle.

Thanks

About the only "real" stuff in the armor category is the British stuff. The C-47s are real, but the Thunderbolts aren't real (they're trainers), and that "Panther" isn't a Panther. It's been a few years since I've seen it, so I can't help you with the SS recon stuff; I'll have to watch it again.

Bridge to Far

Ok now.

This is the secound time today someone has taken wrong.

The German armor is all fake. I didnot say that it was. The closest they come to the German vechicles is a very slim chance at a Sd Kfz 232 and a Sd Kfz 10. They may also have a 5 cm PaK along with a 7.5 cm PaK.

They do have a nice collection of German machine guns and personal arms as well.

No, I didn't think that you thought all of the German armor was real, otherwise you wouldn't have asked what it was. You were observant enough to notice the armor panels were wrong, so you obviously wouldn't have thought they were real. I was just saying from the last time that I watched the movie that the only vehicle that I recognized to be actual German other that staff cars and trucks was that large halftrack in the aerial photo. It's been a while since I've seen it, but that's just what I recall. Sorry you misunderstood me.

I guess I am sorry for jumping also.
But these people who think that you don't know what the BW and ZW series meant should really not jump in feet first.

Overall it is probably the best collection of allied war material put into one film. The lines of tanks are something but in one shot you can see they lined up a few shermans then had modern armor in front. As the coloum fired up the smoke hides the modern armor. Good trick.

Now to think with the special effects and modelling, there could be one heck of good movie put together now.

Sorry Logan

No problem. One of my favorite videos for military equipment is Sahara with Humphrey Bogart. It is the only movie that I've ever seen with M3 Lee tanks (it was made during the war). The German plane is really a P-51 and the German vehicles are really American, but atleast everything is WWII-period. Also, the small arms are accurate. The Americans have Thompsons and the Brits have that neat old Vickers that A Bridge Too Far should've tried to get a hold of. The movie is one of my favorites. Does anyone know of any other movies with an M3 Lee/Grant?

yeah, in Bridge too far only british eqipment looks genuine, the sherman tanks in poarticular, while germans look believable, but armours and soldier uniforms are not accurate

Got to agree the line up of actors is great.
But I would still like to know what was used in place of SdKfz 251's.

Logan.....
Another vintage flick with the M-3 Lee/Grant in it is FIVE GRAVES TO CAIRO at its beginning.
Also 1941 has a Lee in it skippered by Dan Ackroyd, and it was named "LULUBELLE"

M3 Grant

Post by admfisher » 26 Aug 2002 22:40

I seen an old black and white that was about some soldiers in the desert with a Grant. The tank was quite abit in the film but it was not a shooting film, more of one based on a unit lost or something like that.

bad effects

One of my favourites is A Bridge too Far.
I know the German tank is really an American one etc, but its still good and the story is correct.
But one film that springs to mind is Battle of the Bulge.
I dont mind the film as a rule, but I cringe every time i see a 'German' tank.
And in some parts, even remote control ones, good grief!
Now this is one hell of a Hollywood glam film

Battle of Bulge

Post by admfisher » 27 Aug 2002 21:14

I havent seen the Battle of Bulge what year was it made?
My idea on movies was that they would be able to reproduce large battles like never before with the special effects take a look at what the models did in Star Wars.

naff effects

Battle of the Bulge was made sometime in the mid sixties as far as I can remember, you must know it.
Its got a shitload of 'big' actors from that time, Telly Savalas, Henry Fonda etc etc.
If you see the tanks in this film, you will see what I mean!
Pretty poor effort for such a blockbuster film I think.
But then again its made for the general public who know sweet fa about German armour or history in general.

Ignorance

"But then again its made for the general public who know sweet fa about German armour or history in general."

Just a total pity the ignorance of things such as history. But then if you dont learn form it you will repeat it.

I was just watching the news and now talk of war with Saddam again. I guess we will never learn.
