Rommel (2012)

Post by Sufyan Hadi » 15 Sep 2020 15:26

Opening this thread for discussion of the 2012 Rommel film, there's been a considerable lack of interest in the film on other forums and websites I've perused, would like to discuss it as well as identify certain non-focused-on figures in the film.

OP asked about a character named "Horst" in a different topic (and on a different forum) stating "I specifically hear a Horst mentioned as a Nazi Party aide to Carl-Heinrich von Stülpnagel, the commander in Paris.". A few books about the plot that I was able to search using google books mention a "Dr. Horst" once as being the son-in-law of General Hans Speidel. No idea what became of "Dr. Horst" but Speidel managed to survive and was a general in the Bundeswehr, wrote a book about D-Day as well as a memoir. I assume his memoir would provide more information about his son-in-law, but I don't own a copy.

That would be me.

This video has English captions. Not the best but decipherable.

Sufyan,

I watched the german TV production two times, just a few weeks ago for the second time, what to say, difficult..?

Ulrich Tukur, as Erwin Rommel, very good, impressive, like he is in almost all of his movies.

I like to share a quote from the german Wikipedia:

"Als Film ein Ereignis - als Geschichtsstunde gruselig"
Translation to the english language: "As a film an event - as a history lesson creepy"

That hits the nail on the head.
The relatively brief article about the film in the German Wikipedia speaks volumes, an actually superfluous film.
I have nothing to add to that.

The german version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gNLq_XQT-A

P.S. I liked the quality of the sets, and scenery.

Mark, you are right, almost everything was "perfect", even the many small details, but the TV production lacked the "feeling" "Gespür" for the time, the "Kolorit" that could be described as such.

This was simply better in the older productions, much more coherent ("stimmig"), probably because the old productions were filmed in black and white throughout...
