Best films on Nazi Germany, Nazi-occupied nations & the war

Post by Fletch_UK » 21 Mar 2012 19:42

I've seen plenty of war & occupation films, very few great films based on life in Germany itself under the Nazis.
So thread is both to improve my own viewing material, and to help others who may not have seen such films as Idi I Smotri (the furthest thing from Hollywood glamorisation as you can get).

Please make your own suggestions.

Life in Nazi Germany:

Der Wannsee Conferenz (albeit just based on one single SS & senior bureaucrats meeting to discuss Final Solution)
Conspiracy (English version)
Valkyrie
Der Untergang (albeit in its dying days)
Sophie Scholl: The Final Days

Nazi-occupied nations (including Holocaust):

Idi I Smotri (Come & See)
Schindler's List
The Pianist
Escape from Sobibor
Defiance
Massacre in Rome
Army of Shadows
Von Ryan's Express
Inglourious Basterds
The Grey Zone
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
Sunshine
The Sound of Music ;)
The Cuckoo (I didn't think much of this one, but different strokes for different folks)

Nazi Germany's WWII:

Idi I Smotri
Cross of Iron
Stalingrad
Das Boot
Enemy at the Gates
Where Eagles Dare
Saving Private Ryan
Escape to Victory ;)
Inglourious Basterds
Schindler's List
Defiance
Massacre in Rome
Stalingrad: Dogs, do you want to live forever
Brest Fortress

Does anyone know any great films (or docs, but preferably films) dealing with the Gestapo, SS, SD, life in Germany 33-45... ?
JACKBOOT BRITAIN
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KG6EUKO/

Feat. Heydrich, Himmler, Goeth, Globocnik et al...
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/220 ... ot-britain

Look for "Jackboot Russia" & "Jackboot USA" in 2016.

Lacome, Lucien by Louis Malle is great film about the Germany occupation of France (and french collaboration).

Also great:

-Ashes and Diamonds by Andrzej Wajda
-Night and Fog by Alain Resnais
-The Sorrow and the Pity by Marcel Ophuls
-Overlord by Stuart Cooper
-The Ascent by Larisa Shepitko
-Ivan's Childhood by Andrei Tarkovsky
-The Cranes are Flying by Mikhail Kalatozov
-Ballad of a Soldier by Grigoriy Chukhray
-The Thin Red Line by Terrence Malick

If you're looking for something set between WWI and WWII: Berlin Alexanderplatz by Rainer Werner Fassbinder.
Good luck.

The mini-serie Holocaust has some "good" scenes dealing with the gestapo. The actor who is playing erich dorff plays a brilliant role.

The underrated "AMEN" directed by Costa-Gavras,is a good film about the true story of the SS Kurt Gestein.

Die Fälscher/ The Counterfeiters
by Stefan Ruzowitzky
Great movie about dramatized version of Operation Bernhard

Soldaat van Oranje/Soldier of Orange
Zwartboek/Black Book
both films by Paul Verhoeven have a plot involving gestapo.

Some of the "biggies" are set in Occupied countries - thinking of things like The Guns Of Navarone, Ill Met By Moonlight, They Who Dare, The Heroes of Telemark etc. - along with significant chunks of films like A Bridge Too Far, The Cockleshell Heroes...
Twenty years ago we had Johnny Cash, Bob Hope and Steve Jobs. Now we have no Cash, no Hope and no Jobs....
Lord, please keep Kevin Bacon alive...

I watched "Operation: Daybreak", thanks for the suggestion, it was pretty good. However, I could not find a widescreen DVD anywhere.
