Hi Tobi1418,
I found this image on Ebay. I think that is the same generator that appeared in my photos posted on 17 May 2009 in this section. Does someone knows their german specific designation?

Hi all,
Well, I found this image on Ebay. I assume that these devices will be some kind of theodolites for artillery (I think these devices are used for measuring angles and distances, no?). Can anyone confirm this?

Hi all,
I found these images on Ebay.de.
First image: I think it is the same equipment of my last photo posted on 20 August. I guess these devices will be some kind of theodolites for artillery
Second image: I don not know
Third image: This equipment is a german sound locator but Does anyone know their official designation?
In the book "Sound locators, Fire Control Systems and Searchlights of the German heavy Flak units" of Werner Muller there are two wartime photos of this equipment but does not mention its name. I just know that this is a model older than the standard RRH (Ringtrichter-Richtungshörer) sound locator.

Hello,
german equip1.JPG
The thing on the large tripod seems to be a balloon theodolite. The object on the small tripod could be another Richtkreis or the optics of a heavy gun.
Wehrmacht in wintertarn,Vermessung ,-.jpg
Definitely a balloon theodolite.
The build of both balloon theodite looks rather old-fashioned even for the time. While the optical system of a normal theodolite is basically just a telescope (i.e. a tube with some lenses where light falls in on one end and the eye of the observer is on the other end) the optics of a balloon theodolite have an additional prism reflecting the ray 90 degrees to the side. This allows for aiming at high elevation angles plus allows the observer a more ergonomical posture (i.e. standing more or less straight instead of crouching behind the apparatus). As the name already implies balloon theodolites were used primarily to observe for high-flying (but slowly moving) objects like weather balloons, cloud banks and so on.
(Theodolites measure only angles. To compute distances or heights at least one element of known length (so-called base) must be introduced into the observation configuration. This can be done by measuring the distance between two observation positions or observing from two locations with known coordinates or by using a bar of exactly known length (Basislatte) as an auxiliary target).
Wehrmacht in wintertarn,Vermessung 1.JPG
A normal theodolite of a quite modern type (for the time) with a target pole (Zielstab) on top. The (not displayed) pin of the target pole is directly above the vertical axis of the theodolite. Thus if the position of said target pole has been determined by other theodolites the derived postion can be directly used for further computations of the observations of the theodolite displayed. Or you can place the theodolite with the target pole above an already known position and do observations from there while at the same time serving as an aim for another theodolite.
Best regards
Torsten
