I have no photo to add, but after working through the documents from the OKH Abwicklungsstab regarding the Jassy disaster, I was astonished at how often the Schwimmwagen was mentioned in the reports of survivors. Usually it was the last vehicle left in running condition, the only vehicle to cross rivers in the absence of any bridges, and the most precious possession of generals and other officers, kept until the last moment. Someone even managed to get his VW across the Donau into Bulgaria, where it was probably confiscated.

It is a Schwimmwagen which mounts a 2cm Gebirgsflak 38. It is the only photo I ever found. Does anybody else have some info about this combination? Was it a prototype, a test? Any production numbers? Where was it used?
As there seems to be some confusion whether this weapon really existed, I quote from a report of 376. ID in NARA R-78 R-140:

"Der Befehl des Korps lautet, um 21.00 Uhr zusammen mit Panzern, Sturmgeschützen und 2 cm Flak auf Volksschwimmwagen von Vutcani aus nach W anzugreifen, den Barladul zu überschreiten und den Raum Costesti-Orgoesti zu erreichen."

Hi all,

I found on Ebay this rare image of a Trippel car. It seems a prototype of the SG6/41 with a closed body....and rare German markings... 8O

Hi, all,

To which Fallschirmjäger units would these Schwimmwagen belong?

The first photo would be in Messina, Italy, 1943.

The second photo in Normandy, 1944.

Hi Sturm 78,

a great pic! Thank You very much for posting. Excuse me for my late respones. I have found the information, that there was made by Trippel a series with closed superstructure and folding sunroof in 1942 for the use in propaganda companies. Here another pic of such a vehicle (source of the pic and info: "Kraftfahrzeuge und Panzer der Reichswehr, Wehrmacht und Bundeswehr ab 1900" by Werner Oswald.

Best regards

Bert

Hi carius,

I remember a visit to German vehicle collector in the 1970s.
The man had a Volkswagen Type 166 Schwimmwagen for sale, the asking price at the time was 25.000,- German marks, and the Schwimmwagen was roadworthy.

That was a lot of money back then, unfortunately we didn't have the capital, a mistake if I even just point to the prices for today's and roadworthy examples...
