Pz III F-G-H Danzig 4 Pz Div 45.jpg

I've found this photo in Wydawnictwo Militaria 236 "Panzerwaffe 1945 vol III".
The caption says that this Pz III is "probably from the reserve unit attached to the 4. Pz. Div., Danzig, 03.1945".

Could someone tell what is this "Reserve Unit" ? Could this tank have been attached to the Stab./Pz. Rgt. 35 or to the Stab of one of the two Pz.Abt of Rgt. 35 ?

Thanks.

After some researches, this Pz III is an ausf. E or F upgraded and rearmed to new standards, the "Umbewaffnung Programm". (Jentz & Doyle, Panzer Tracts N°3-2)

In 1945, the Pz III were often seen in Panzer-Ersatz-und-Ausbildungs-Abteilungen (training & replacement units). But, as the front moved in Germany, these units were thrown into battle. In Wehrkreis XX (Danzig), there was Pz.-Ers.-u.-Abt. Feldherrnhalle, which fought in Elbing brückenkopf, and whose elements retreated towards Danzig.

Perhaps this Pz III belonged to 1./Pz.-Ers.-u.-Abt FHH. The photograph was taken in front of the youth hostel of today's Ul Walowa (ex- Wallgasse)

What makes you think that The Ausf D is a tauchpanzer. I have never seen an Ausf D set up as a tauchpanzer. Kiestinki is in Finland - not aware of any units using tauchpanzers in this campaign.

I see a Tauchpanzer "frame" around the mantlet, do you not ? The other tank appears to me to have Tauchpanzer style exhaust pipes. Further the fact that neither tank has a turret stowage box fitted. Sadly Jentz could not find the return for Panzer Abteilung z.V.b. 40 so other than them having 8 x Panzer III (according to Lexikon der Wehrmacht) we can't say for sure which type of Panzer III they used.

Alan
On the Pz III Ausf D the front plate of the turret has raised rivets especially below the mantlet. With the sun reflecting of the face of the turret in the above photo it is highlighting these rivets making it appear like the frame for a tauchpanzer. Ausf D never got a turret stowage bin.

With the other Pz III - the photo is to poor/fuzzy to be sure but it may have Tauchpanzer exhausts. Or it could just be a deep wading modification.

Rich, I see what you mean about the D but as for the other one, there were no deep wading modifications before the M so to me that is a Tachpanzer exhaust.

North Africa.

A Pz. Kw. III Ausf. G of PR 5 (see numbers on the turret) stopped at the edge of a mountain road.

Any idea of the area? Cheers. Raúl M 8-).
