Genuine original wartime signature on a Verlag photopostcard of Grand Admiral Karl Donitz

In January 1943, Dönitz achieved the rank of Grand Admiral - Commander-in-Chief of the German Navy.
On 30 April 1945, after the death of Adolf Hitler, Dönitz was named Hitler's successor. On 7 May 1945, he ordered Alfred Jodl to sign the German surrender in France. At the Nuremberg Trials, Dönitz was sentenced to ten years in Spandau Prison. He lived out the rest of his long life in relative obscurity in Aumühle, Germany, and died there of a heart attack aged 99. He was buried in Waldfriedhof Cemetery in Aumühle without military honours.
