Neutral Ireland's involvement in intelligence gathering (Allied or Axis)?

Post by Viktor.S » 13 May 2020 12:57

Hello everyone,

After hearing about the planning for the D-Day landing being influenced by weather reports from Ireland, I started wondering how much either the Allied or Axis side made use of this country or its citisens for intelligence gathering during the war? For example I have heard rumours of Abwehr contacts with the IRA, but I have no idea if that was true or if it came to anything.

Thanks.

Try a search for Seamus O'Donovan or Friedrich Carl Marwede/Ernst Weber Drohl for starters. Yes, there were contacts between IRA and Abwehr. The “S plan” of 1939 might also be worth looking at.

I was surprised to read here that Colonel Dan Bryan, Director of Irish Intelligence, was present at the formal surrender of Uboats, on May 14 1945.
