French soldiers and equipment (movies)

Post by David Lehmann » 20 Dec 2003 18:47

Hello all,

I was just looking in the British Pathé website :

Pathé has been created and owned by the French Emile and Charles Pathé in 1896. Pathé Journal and its news movies has been created in 1909. He created also a branch in the United Kingdom called British Pathé.

Perhaps this message should have been posted in the "related website" section but I was afraid this section wasn't checked very often by people.

By searching with the words : French troops, Maginot, French Army etc. you can find France 30's and 1939/1940 images and movies. All the images have the British Pathé orange logo on them if you don't order them but it is sometimes nice enough.
You can also order the high resolution movies but you can also simply ask and download a free low resolution + logo movie. Some are worth downloading IMHO.
But you will need cable or ADSL connection since several movies have a size of 5-10 MB.
I have listed some of the movies with French troops (you can type in the movie # in the advanced search section in the film ID field) but there are also lots of
movies about the BEF for example.
I have seen various pieces of equipments : Somua S-35, FT-17 and Hotchkiss tanks, Renault UE, various trucks and cars, FM 24/29 and Hotchkiss Mle1914 MGs, Lebel and Berthier rifles, lots of artillery (two movies about the 194mm GPF SPA), German POWs, Maginot Line, infanterie de l'air (French airborne troops in the 30's), alpine troops, Narvik embarking, a few planes (Farman, MS406, Potez 630 ...), and even a very furtive view of an AMC P16 Mle29 in the 11min soundless movie beginning with shipments for Narvik :
