The Organization of the 3e Division légère de Cavalerie in the 1940 Campaign?

Post by Sid Guttridge » 01 Jan 2021 18:45

I am currently reading (I use the word loosely, as my French is pretty basic) J'étais médecin avec les chars by André Soubiran, first published in Vichy France in 1943.

It follows the 3e Régiment d'auto-mitrailleuses of the 3e Division légère de Cavalerie throughout the 1940 campaign.

Throughout the book the author refers to its subordination to an intervening brigade headquarters.

I was wondering how these divisions were organised and what the official number and designation of this anonymous brigade headquarters was?

Many thanks for any assistance,

Sid.

All your questions are answered in detail here:
http://france1940.free.fr/armee/dlc.html
If you don't want to read the whole webpage, the short answer is that the Division Légère de Cavalerie had a Brigade de Cavalerie (cavalry brigade) and a Brigade Légère Mécanique (light mechanised brigade) plus support units (artillery, engineers, etc.)
The 3e Régiment d'auto-mitrailleuses was subordinated to the 13e Brigade Légère Mécanique. The other brigade of the division was the 5e Brigade de Cavalerie.

Yes but no

the HQ Brigade concerned
is not a BLM - Light Mechanised Brigade (1st to 6th) Brigade Légère Mécanique only in the DLM Divisions Légères Mécaniques

but a BLM - Light MOTORISED Brigade (11th to 16th) of the 6 DLC Light Cavalry Divisions Divisions Légères de Cavalerie

so 3e RAM together with 2e RDP form the 13e Brigade Légère Motorisée
