French Tank Classification

Post by Lohengram » 27 May 2020 07:26

Hello Everyone,

I am hoping someone with a bit more knowledge and ability in the France language could help me sort out the French tanks of the interwar and WWII period into their correct French categories. I know the french had Char Léger d’Infanterie, Automitrailleuses de Reconnaissance, etc. But, I am not sure which tank goes into which category or how the french system exactly worked. I sometimes for example see the S 35 classified as a Char Moyen or a Char de Cavalerie. Which is correct and what other tanks belong to these and other categories? If someone can point out a resource, thread, or simply reply with the correct categories with the tanks in them I would be very thankful. If possible I am also wondering about prototypes such as AMX 40 or the Char G1 where they would be placed within the French system.

Cheers!

hello

something like

Chars légers
Renault FT
H 35
H 39
R 35
R 40
FCM 36

Chars de bataille
D1
D2
B1 bis
probably taking place here the five several - 26 to 37,5 t. - G1 types

Chars lourds
FCM 2C

given the dualism within the French Army until 1942 about the Armored Force divided between Tanks attached to the Infantry Arm and the Cavalry, it existed also
Char de Cavalerie
SOMUA S 35
and probably also for this one

My first thought is the G1 as specified in pre protoype proposals, or as it might have been developed would have been a battle tank like the D or B series. However we can't say for certain where French doctrine might have led in 1941-42. So, the classification system may have been altered.
