Replica of German WWII Enigma machine on show at Warsaw gallery

A Warsaw gallery on Tuesday put on show a rare replica of the Nazi German Enigma cipher machine that was made by the Polish intelligence service before World War II (ed: actually 1940, per information below).

As part of an exhibition entitled Enigma: Mystery Solved, the Kordegarda Gallery is showcasing the Polish-made replica of the Enigma for the first time in the country. Experts say the replica is unique on a global scale as it is the only surviving item of its kind ever made available to the public and researchers.

“Cracking the code of the German encryption machine Enigma was one of the greatest achievements of Polish cryptologists and the Polish intelligence service, which contributed to the defeat of Germany during World War II,” Poland’s National Centre for Culture, which put together the show, wrote on its website.

After the outbreak of World War II, almost all Polish replicas of the Enigma were destroyed to remove the traces of Polish intelligence. Most Polish cryptologists behind the project travelled to France, where they resumed their research. There, in a secret facility in the Vichy region of central France, the replica now on display in Warsaw was created.

The Warsaw exhibition runs until November 28.
